I'm curious of people's thoughts on the ethics of cleaning out cracks to climb them. Like ones full of dirt from runoff, or grass etc. Is it ethical/acceptable to clean/scrape the dirt out?

Cracks are natural drainages. It's natural for them to have a bit of dirt/lichen/flaky munge inside. Of course it's alright to clean them out a bit. It will make future ascents more enjoyable for everyone. Beware of cracks that are absolutely chock-full of dirt, however- they are the ones that probably continue to collect dirt during runoff after rain/snowmelt.

it all depends on the current ethics of the area and who owns the land...

some places pratice no cleaning of any kind(mostly to save endangered lichen and mosses or glyphs), wheras others could care less.. i'd discuss it with the local climbers in the area beforehand to see what is acceptable..
