Hey, i'm new on the site, but i've been climbing for about a year. Me and some buddies are lookin' at climbing the stair well @ our school, it's a 3 story climb. we are wondering if it would be better to preplace the first couple of quickdraws or not. because of the angle. :?:

What kind of angle are we talkin'? If you would feel better pre-placing those draws, you should go for it. I'd feel silly decking in the first few feet, especially since this isn't even a real rock.

to give you a mental picture it is a square stair-case, and it's 2 lengths for everystory, and there are 12 steps per length. so about a 50-60 degree.

style is a personal decision - if you want to be uber-urban-hardcore then you don't pre-place anything - maybe you don't even use a rope - but serious question...stairs? you expecting it to be a challenge?

that's going to be judgement call on your part. I'm all for urban climbing. There's no reason that climbing the underside of a stair case can't be as hard as anything outdoors. if you've got 'em, climb 'em

Placing pro is always a good idea if you have any doubt. That said, I will warn you that unfortunately most places frown on "buildering" or climbing man-made structures as they feel it is a liability that they arent willing to take. I feel your pain - buildings and bridges is about all there is to climb in Philly and I have had my share of "close encounters" with the cops and security authorities - so just a heads up.

In reply to: it's urban, risky, and like the only thing to do right now. barebacking a TS hooker is urban and risky, too, if those are the only qualifiers consider when looking for things to do. doesn't mean we want a trip report when you do it, though.

ha ha! it's like urbex ... but not abandoned :S (http://www.urbex.org / http://www.infiltration.org) Yeah, I've done some silly stuff like that, find a brick building - and start climbing - rap from the top ... ha ha funny one was a free ascent up the side of a crane then abseil from the top of that ... wheeeeeeee!!! (I'm not promoting these activities ... just fitting in with the conversation ;-p ) but if you like the idea visit my site http://www.addelayed.com

Just kidding. If thereīs space between a stair and the one above it the you shouldn't really have much of a problem, being able to grab/step on the entire stair. If not, then sure, lead it and place protection. Are you planning on using the stairs for your descent or rappelling like a normal person?? (again, kidding)
