In reply to: ditto?? why are gym rental shoes that slimy green color, always?? so you can tell who rents and who owns their own shoes. no one, in their right mind, would buy those ugly slimy green shoes...

Its the same reason rental bowling shoes are four or five different colors. You see, the companies that produce this sort of rental gear can only afford to hire color blind people that can't get jobs anywhere else. I mean who in their right minds hires color blind people anyway? Would you want to employ someone who can't tell the difference between mauve and fusha? What if you're having a color emergency? What was the original question again? Oh yea, the shoes, a few years ago slimy green for rental gear was massed produced by the producing people (Acme I think) on a bad tip that slimy green was the new black. Stupid asses, even a colored blind fashion expert (yea like there are any of those around, see paragraph above) knew that piss yellow was the new black. Several years later, that mistake is finally correcting itself because my climbing gym has slowing been getting rid of the slimy greens for the piss yellows. Little do they know that now, neon slimy green is now the new black. These people need to get on board with whats hot in rental gear, man. If you think rental climbing shoes are nasty, check out the heavies that rent bowling shoes. MMMM cheese. Is that rochefort?

My only guess is that back in the mid 70's when climbing was really taking off (correct any historical errors on my part, I wasn't even a glimmer yet) that nasty slimy green color was the ultra hip climbing color that matched their clientele's bell bottoms and Clarence Williams III afro style head hair. But the shoes were built so good that gyms haven't bothered to recycle them in for 2005 model LaSportiva. So, I'm guessing, in 10,000 years the only things left on earth will be cockroaches and green rental shoes.

I thought it was because of the odd color it would be easy to distinguish rentals from shoes a person owned, making them harder to wander off with

I always thought it was the same reason they painted institutions that color, It so that when you are 2 feet off the deck and your nerves are going and you cant find the next jug and you look down at the wicked exposure you see the soothing green color of your rental shoes and it relaxes you just enough that you manage to make a controlled landing on the pad. But then again maybe its the cheapest dye.

dude, they're green because the cheapest shoes for gym owners are either the Bufo gym shoe (really slimey green) or the Evolv Quest (i think it's the quest- either way, that's Evolv's green shoe as well...) green leather must be cheap. makes you wonder where it came from...
