Goal for the summer

I currently can almost lead short 5.8 sport. I have lead a short 5.7 trad before. I can (barely) climb 5.10a toproped. This summer, from now (1st week of May) I hope to go climbing at least once a week until the beginning of October. So I hope to go out about, say, 20 times for at least 3 hours.

What kind of goal should I set for myself this summer? What is the best someone fit like me can hope to accomplish?

just get out there and climb and dont worry about chasing numbers yet. the best thing you can do as a new climber is to climb as much as possible on all different types of routes and rock. climb every opportunity you can.

lead what you can safely, TR anything you can get your paws on.

Actually, I'm not really a new climber. I've been doing it for about 2 years as consistently as I could. I definitely feel that I need to start chasing numbers by this point. I have some real definite goals for the future and want to start working up to them. Also, I feel that I enjoy pushing my limits.

Well if chasing numbers is what you really want then you should train and not just climb. But if you are setting goals you need to train to reach these goals, you can't just climb and expect them to happen(they eventually will but it will take longer). Maybe set a goal of being able to lead that 10A that you can top rope. See what training you need to do to lead it and do that, then in september try to lead it and make sure you can do it by october!

my goal for the summer is to climb as much as possible, find a river to kayak (i live in IL, not much in the whitewater department), and do a few 100+ mile bike rides. sounds pretty reasonable, right? 8^)

alright, then climb in increments.

set a goal for yourself that should be attainable. like- lead 5.7 trad, lead 5.8 sport, and TR .10a comfortably

hopefully you'll reach these fairly soon and then step up each one a notch and continue as such.

how are you gonna chalk up your new clothes if your walkin around shirtless?

my plan for the summer basically lines right up with yours, though. i was hopin to go to europe in early september, but now it looks like i may have to wait till mid-october.

holy cow, me too, I've always wanted to be one of those "hardcore" rock climbers

my personal goal: have a good time climbing this summer and hopefully improve while doing so

Original Poster: If you are concerned about improving and climbing harder grades then you should take a good hard look at your attributes as a climber and choose a few key weak points. Develop your weaknesses and your ability as a climber will surely rise. This is a continual process. Every few months is probably a good time to take a look at your "climber self" and refocus on whats important (the weaknesses).

Climbing more than once a week would probably help, too. Climbing, say, 3 or 4 times a week would be great to keep you on track to improving.

You could start by climbing more than three hours at a time. Is there some peculiar reason you can't go climbing for a whole day?

Yea man, ditto that - how can you improve if you only go for 3 hours at a time? Unless the climbing is in your backyard. Don't know about you guys, but most places I go I've gottta drive there, hike in, and get harnessed up and that usually takes some time. 3 hours wouldn't be much for getting stronger!

My first suggestion, and I wish someone had made me do this, is if the falls are safe, and you have a way to retrieve gear if you fail to make it to the top, LEAD everything you get on. That way, you aren't getting used to the TR. If 10a is your max, bolt to bolt em, you can't climb 5.10 by climbing 5.8. Next time you go, bet you one hang that 5.10!

I don't know if I agree w/training if you are working on 5.8-5.10 climbs. I say - Just go CLIMB! And spend more than 3 hours doing it! If you have been climbing 2 years but only 3 hours at a time and not that often, you have LOTS to learn yet! I've only been climbing 2 years myself, but I go every weekend, and every vacation, and every spare freaking second of my life- and I still consider myself a newbie!

Don't be stupid. The tree grading scale uses letters.

your goal should be to stop masturbating so much.
that way you can channel your chi into your climbing,
you will notice much improvement.

I have many goals for this summer. To get a couple good alpine climbs in the bag( I really want to climb slesse Bad). A couple longish squamish routes, angels crest, squamish buttress, rock on.
Bag a pile of 5.10 and a few 11's on lead (crime of the century is my current nemisis)

Basicly climb hard every weekend, and train during the week.

I noticed that people that climb ones a week have a hard time to climb harder.

My advice do more days climbing and outdoors not the gym.
If you have no partner there is always boldering and traversing.
