Yes there are, after a sort. Plastic climbing holds dot the walls of the tourist trail like some sort of pox. Seriously. I was wandering around huarez getting used to the altitude and a few of the guiding cervices and some of the hostels have them. The one at the Israli guide service (Andean Adventures I think?) has a big bouldeing cave that is free (even free loaner shoes when i was there). I spent a while goofing off with some young local kids. It was a good seen untill a bunch more tourists showed up and it got over crowded. I hear lima has some too, and I'll bet Cuzco does atracting as many tourists as it does. Where you going and what to do? I may be able to recomend some people to hook up with along the way. Ryan

actually i'll be going to peru this summer... sucks cuz i'll be missing squamish and such. i started a post about indoor climbing in peru (stupid i know) but i don't think i'll be able to afford going to huaraz every weekend. I'll be volunteering for the entire summer in the health and medical field. so i'm trying to figure where i can go climbing locally and release my stress. For the first month i'll be close to lima but after that i have no idea (prolly somewhere rural). so u've been to peru?? can u help me out with where i can definately do some gooooooood outside bouldering and maybe some indoor places too??

If you'll be close to Lima there are some gyms that feature climbing walls, the most notable ones being Gym El Polo in the district of Surco (in front of the US embassy in fact), and Millenium Gym in the district of Miraflores. I seem to remember that you can have a trial run on each of those gyms for a few days or climbing sessions. Other than that, I don't know of many goood outside bouldering areas, since I didn't get that involved in climbing while I was there (and yes, I do regret it now). I remember there is one long traverse-like bouldering area close to Gym El Polo, not sure about the exact location but if you're interested I'll look into it. Anyway, I hope you enjoy your stay in Peru. I'm going back there in mid-July and will definately be on the lookout for climbing sites other than the ones I mentioned.

there is great bouldering near huaraz. there are some photos in the latest urban climber. also, google it, and you will see more. there are local that climg v5 in homemade shoes that are copies of 5.10s! i walked the hills around town for more, and there are more glacial washed boulders, but much of it is featureless and smooth. and, it is a long walk between boulders. also, i heard tell of get boulders near some mountain lakes. there is a sport climbing area near town, but it is really difficult for the grades. great climbing though, you'd want to be comfortable sporty 12+. good luck! the locals are friendly. i want to go back.

I'll also be in Peru for the entire month of August. Doing the Inca trail a couple days after we arrive and then will be making our way to Hauraz. I'm tossing in a pair of shoes as i've read that there is some great bouldering in and around that town. Maybe see some of you out there....
