Rico, its because of the exchange rate.
1$ American = 1.50$ Canadian.

ohh, and while we are posting pictures of each other gyms, here's mine: Rock Oasis

I like this place, its colourful.

Amen jman! I work at Sportrockhttp://www.sportrock.com in Alexandria VA (they have 2 other locations in the DC area as well) and the prices went up a few months ago to $16 for a day pass. Add $9 if you need to rent all your gear, and you have spent $25 for a few hours of indoor climbing. I agree that its a bit steep, but in order to keep up the gym, pay all the employees, and offer good classes etc., you have to charge that much. Plus the cost of living in the DC area is so high, it all has to do with economics. When it's over 100 degrees with the heat index, and a code red ozone day (like today is), it's worth it to pay a bunch and climb indoors!

I'm very lucky......

here at Monterrey, Mexico at Extremo I pay 350 pesos (like 35 USD) per month !!!!

plus a membership of 300 pesos (like 30 USD) = first pay 650 pesos (like 65 USD)
and includes me:

3 weekdays of training with an instructor (two days of boulder problems, one of equipment and harness use) which teach you technique and movements....

Come to Monterrey !!!!!! Coolest city at Mexico (near portero chico)

Earthtreks in Columbia MD has 16,000 ft of climbing area. I pay $80 a month for a family membership. I believe it's around $15 for a day pass though. Not cheap, but having routes set by Jason Kehl and Ben Montgomery makes it worth the extra $$$.

I climb at the boiler room in Kingston. I have all my own gear so I don't need to rent any, but a day pass is $10 canadian. My summer membership was $100 and full year membership is $370 I believe. You can also get monthly and three month memberships. I find it's very reasonably priced and the climb is top quality.

to give you an idea of what happens when gyms are too cheap:

climbing planet in chile, biggest gym in south america... is probably going out of buisness, partly for lack of interest and partly because they charge 5 bucks for a day pass, if gyms are gonna stick around I'd say it's worth it for them to keep charging the kinds of fees you're talking about

i went to a gym that cost $13 for a day pass not including gear. thats the reason i dont like gyms and havent climbed in one for a long time. i climb outside all the time even when its 30 degrees, as long as the walls dry.

Climbmax in Tempe is our Climbers Gym... You can climb for 8/day or $25/month for students.... $30/month for moneybags...

It's more of a Donation though because Mike Covington (the owner) makes more money off his classes and his Groups than anything us climbers can generate..

Also the SPonsers help out alot when Mike Holds comps so that He can furnish some booty to the climbers. (Everyone ususally get's somethin) Comps can Strenghtin your Gym scene if you can generate the Right attitude. It usually gives the climbers a sense of community and puts value on the time climbers put into their Training..

Phoenix Rock Gym is our other gym. Paul Deif runs that one but he doesn't seem to draw as many of the Hardcore's. (Except with his Wages) He charges about $10 more per day but you can tie in alot there and it is a little Bigger.. Rumours are that Paul can draw in 6 figures/Year with his Groups and users though. This is usually where beginners start from here in Phoenix.. Not alot of Bouldering though..

We suffer from lack of Huge Gyms in Phoenix. Hell even Flagg and Tucson have bigger single gyms but they are pricey.. But it is well made up for during out extra long peak season and the proximity of crags within the State. Especially Flagg and Tucson..

Our single biggest investment is the Phoenix Bouldering Comp where you can usually pull away with some free month passes to the gyms to help alleviate the close to $60 fee's Jim Waugh has to Charge for Participating in this event.. My opinion is that if You invest in your Skills than this is a worthwile investment once a year for all the great Booty you bring home each year...

I won $350 bucks in 2001 before I broke my Wrist so I was able to make back my fee's from the previous 4 comps I entered..

I guess the Bottom line is "How much value do you put on your Skills.."

I'll buy that for a Doller...

JBone
