The BLM will start charging a $5 a night fee for camping at (the previously free) Tuttle Creek Campground starting May 27th, 2005, with a maximum stay of 24 days. While it is currently legal to camp in the main Alabama Hills, if climbers start making any noticeable impact (especially toilet related), it could easily lead to climbing restrictions in the Hills. Consider camping to the east of Movie road among the many winding roads among cool rock formations (without developed climbs) where you are not as visible as the main climbing formations (which are on the west side of Movie Road). Please go to lengths to 'Leave No Trace' if you choose to camp in the Hills and not at Tuttle Creek. Note that the BLM will also start charging $5/night at Horton Creek near Bishop, starting May 23rd, 2005.
