So has anyone seen the new guidebook for the Gunks? How is it?

which one? ok. there is the New Dick william's Guide, which is just for the traps yet is some how thicker than the select guide for the traps and the nears. It looks pretty good and has a butt load more routes (duh). There is also a reprint of the old Swain Guide. you know, the one that was going for big bucks on E-bay last summer... well you can get it all now for 25 bucks, The nears, The traps, Millbrook, and yes. . . . Sky Top (no climbing there, but plenty of awesome routes). If you have the old dick william's guide (1995 I think?) I wouldn't bother with the new one unless you've done all there is to do in the old book. The Reprint of the Old Swain guide. . .well, it's kinda cool, but I haven't bought it yet either.

I was asking about the new Dick Williams guide. Also, is he going to come out with one for Nears?

Someone else posted that the Nears version is due next year. Who knows what that means though.

He did a great job. Lots of new route link ups. All the bolted raps are listed. Some grades changed, agree or disagree with some, but, who cares about that. I heard the same thing, the Nears is in the works and supposed to be out next year. On the subject of guide books, anyone hear if the new daks book is out yet?

For me this book had a depressing message...... as a new climber last year I thought I progressed from my first shaky trad lead on No Picnic (5.4 in Gunks Select) to a triumphant breakthrough at 5.7- on Middle Earth! According to the new guide book both these climbs are now rated 5.5 - so in fact no progress all year......

Middle Earth has always been a 5.5 at least in the Swain book, not sure about the select book.

In reply to: Middle Earth has always been a 5.5 at least in the Swain book, not sure about the select book. Funny, both editions of the Swain I have (1st and 3rd) have ME as 5.6+. If it's 5.5 in the "reprint" Swain (which I doubt, but I don't have one in front of me), then clearly that's more than just a reprint.
