one problem, one of the great things about tricams is that they are so light, if you put a trigger and spring mechanism of each one, think of the weight. also, think of the price hike, tricams are cheap and solid, tri useing your nut tool when removeing them,

I've seen a funky old piece that was similar to what you're talking about-kind of a one sided spring loaded camming device. Obviously that particular model didn't stand the test of time but who knows maybe another model will be the piece that fits every placement. I think rocket powered dyno packs would be cool. And haul bags with built in ice makers and a self hauling winching device-this is actually in the works by the guys who put up space boys in El Portrero Chico. And a no-handed self igniting self loading camelbong for those mentally draining leads. And a ultraviolet type head gear/eye piece that tells you exactly which piece will fit in any particular spot in the crack.

This is all fine and dandy, but I'm still looking for someone to improve beer dispensers!

I take it you already have the hat, eh? Small piece of advice: When climbing with a beer hat, use something to keep it on your head, you don't want to loose any beer now. Paul now don't flame me here, s'a joke yah.

Back to the original question - all you need is a wire coathanger and some duct tape and voila! Your tricam now has a rigid stem and can be placed one handed. A friend of mine has done all his tricams this way.

Greg Lowe patented a spring-loaded version of the tri-cam in 1973.

Better yet, someone needs to invent an offset version of the Tricam for flared placements.

I still think a no-handed, self-igniting, self-loading camelbong stonedration system would be sweet for those mentally draining leads would be sweet-any ideas? Tri cams!?-I'm thinking octacams eight lobes-eight points of contact flip it around and have four different sizes of pro. Yeah the Octacam is gonna be sweet. buy a set and get a free camel bong-what a "kind" deal!

Ha! Love all those ideas! I will be buying a beer hat. Here's one from my old partner: Run a ultra tiny fiberoptic cable inside a rope, with tiny microphones on each end, so you can talk to your partner. If anyone steals this idea and makes money on it please share it with me.

from mikedano: "Here's one from my old partner: Run a ultra tiny fiberoptic cable inside a rope, with tiny microphones on each end, so you can talk to your partner." How old is your partner? If he's as old as me, he might remember that a company used to sell these things (with wire cables rather than optical) back in the late 1970s or early 1980s. I actually saw one at the crags once, but I think the headset and it's wires were always getting in the way, expensive, etc etc. This was back in the day when no self-respecting climber would pay for camping and people would say things like "25 bucks for one piece of pro? That's ridiculous!". I have this *really* rad idea. Instead of optical fiber, carry the signals on *radio waves* and use small radios to communicate. The only thing I can't come up with is a catchy name for my product. I'm thinking "Talkarounds" or something like that Tom

This is a little off the existing topics but it definitely fits under New Gear Ideas. For my thesis project I am designing rock climbing gear. I have been climbing trad and sport for the last three years so I know what gear I prefer and what improvements I would like to be made to climbing gear, but I would like to hear from you guys what type of gear you think could be improved. Also, I would like to know what type of gear you use and why. You can also email me at Colin.Tisdale@gmail.com if you would rather. Any comments about existing or non-existing gear would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

the new gear that i want: the little motorolla radios are damn handy for communication on big multipitch climbs, being able to easily communcate when its windy and nasty is really freeken handy. however, i find them bulky, its tough to find a good spot to keep them, they get in the way during gear changeovers, and where i do find to keep them won't be near my mouth or ear. so here is my idea, we don't need much range, only um maybe 60m (duh) so we can ditch the antena and make these things half the size, with a small speaker and an overall lightweight package. them make them flat on one side with a couple of screw bosses. then strew it onto my petzl ercin rock helmet and i'm good to go. that way, its near yer mouth, its near your ear, and its otherwise entrily out of the way.

offset tricams actually sounds like a good idea but you would need left and right versions of each size.

So, just do it, it'll prolly work great, and it wont cost a thing if you already have the walkie-talkies

I've got this brilliant idea. Ok, now don't steal my idea. An 8 sided aluminum chock, I'm going to call it an Octo-centric.

i wanna see a freaking suction cup for aid climbing. my idea is to have it work like a syringe: as you weight it, it sucks. don't flame that line. it would be a sweet way to protect faces.

Hey! I'd use this shit. Don't knock it. Now what we really need is the airbag thing for snow pickets.... Maybe sorda like an air mattress with an equalized clip from each of the corners. In fact screw it, make a sea anchor for use in the snow, no more need to make those tear drop things to rap off. Now don't even joke, this is a sweet idea and I'll see one on the market before my life is over.

personal airbag system - fits in the chalkbag, inflates to enclose you a zorb ball if you fall. If i could just think of a way to stop it rolling down the scree slope....oh and to stop it puncturing on the big spiky pine tree....
