While I'm not really an aid climber, I have done a little, but mostly just TR solo aiding when I can't find a partner. Being cheap me, I made my own aiders from 1" webbing, with help from -

http://climbing.com/techtips/aid/ttaid216/

Although I certainly wouldn't want to use these for any serious aiding, they work well enough to get you through the basic processes and learning curve, and help you decide whether you want to get serious about aiding.

Hope this helps!!

Like many who have tried them, I sure do like my Russian aiders over traditional ones. They make both high stepping and going from aid to free quite a bit easier. I eventually bought some Fish aid trees but still use my homemade cuffs. You can get cuffs on Ebay if you don't want to make your own.

Otherwise both Yates and Misty Mountain make good tradional aiders.

Yates are the best made on the market, IMO. I have a pair of Misty Mtn ladders, as well, and they are fine for getting the job done, but are far inferior when stacked up next to any of the Yates ladders (big wall or speed).

They'll cost ya some bling, though, so if you're just getting into it and you aren't sure how serious your long term investment in the aid game will be, then you might want to look for a cheaper option. Most any of them will get you by long enough to decided if you want to do this on a regular basis. Believe me, it ain't for everyone...

i'm extremely partial to the metolius adjustable daisy's and aiders. i've heard yates makes some good adjustable aiders as well.

I found a pair if 8 step aid ladders on eBAY, used only once or twice for like $25 with shipping. If you just want a basic aidder then get something cheap to practice with and start on.

The first time I did El Cap my partner, Georges Bettembourg a Chamonix guide, used 3 step metal rung etriers with fifi hooks and recovery lines.
I must admit he used them well and there's something to be said for never having to reach back and recover a used aider.
I like to use single aiders with no sub-aider or daisy.

The point is try everything and use what works best FOR YOU.

I have a few pairs, but one that I particularly like is the "karakourom aider" from OnSight. I like the way they pack up into a neat little fist-sized bundle which seems to work a lot better for me on mixed climbs. http://www.onsightequipment.com/Products.asp?CatID=4

http://www.netspy.net/...karakourom-aider.jpg

    NAME: karakourom aider
    DESCRIPTION: lightweight H style aider
    SIZE & WEIGHT: 6 step, 142g
    COLOR & CODE: blue, KORB
    PRICE: $40.95

I believe the prices are in CDN dollars too.

For straight aid climbs, Yates are the way to go.

[brown]I think there is something haywire on the server, when I preview my post everything looks fine, when I submit it, the IMG always has "border="0" />" on the end. Maybe it will magically fix itself[/brown]

i'm currently using metolius etrier type aiders, i got them after a friend lost my yates big wall ladders. about anything will get the job done, but life is so much better with the yates jobbers. much more comfortable and much easier to get your feet into. i'm currently getting a little upset about how long aid pitches are taking me, i think the fruking around with the etriers is a major contributor to my slowness as of late.

if your just getting started and want to give aid a try, just go with whatever, get something cheap, used off of ebay or through this site is your best bet.

if you deciede to stay in the aid game, get some yates ladders. they are the cadilacs of the biz no question. they do cost more new, but not a whole lot. if your going to buy new aiders save yourself dough in the long run by buying yates right off the bat. if you end up haiting the aid stuff just post them for sale on this site, somebody will snatch them up in short order for just a tad below retail.

on the subject of yates aiders: i really got to buy a new set ASAP. i'm seriously considering getting the speed ladders to save a bit of weight, bulk and money over the big walls. is it a worthwhile tradeoff? opinions from the peanut gallerie??

Hey Euro,

Yates are certainly the gold standard, but for fast and light I switch to Misty Mountain.

Cheers to all, enjoy some big air,
Ron
