What do you think about finger and toe length? for fingers is it better to have really small nails for crimpers? or for feet , do your toes hurt more if you have long teonails o small ones?

I had my fingernails surgically removed. It helps tremendously in fingertip sized cracks. The smooth surface of the fingernail can really hinder progress. I prefer the extra friction of having no fingernails. Looks wierd to some people but it's VERY effective. As for toenails, I like to let them go slightly longish. Because of my tight shoes they curl over the tip of the toe a ways. It seems like they provide extra rigidity for serious toe crimping stuff. I guess you would say I'm sort of bi-lenghtual.

Don't cut those toe's too short. Those feet hafta fit into those shoes. Actually, fingers... not too short. thay can peel back to the quick. Cut hen too short and you can feel it when you pull. Luck ti you.

I like to cut my fingers 4~5 days before climbing technical stuff then they are not sensitive and have just enough to use on the thin stuff but if they get too long and they bend esential at places like moab where there are alot of those tiny micro flakes just dig em right in

I always keep my finger nails pretty short, I've broken my longer fingernails off on crimp holds before, and it hurts so badly. Now they're just short, no white, or barely any white on them. I keep my tonails short, just a tiny bit of white. I've popped a toe-nail off before when I slammed into a wall after a fall when they were too long. I can also grip better with my toes if the nails are shorter. I'm just thankful I have nails though. I imagine that they take a lot off of what your fingers would be receiving if you didn't have nails...

If it wasn't for regular climbing, my nails would grow out into six-inch claws.

i was about to post my own thread and then i found this one i am still curious though today i climbed and one of my fingernails was real short. (no white whatsoever) that finger is excessively soar. I was hoping to hear if others have trouble with too short of nails since it is obvious that too long can be a problem

Hmm.... How did I ever miss this thread way back when? This is a serious issue, nails can make or break your succes on a route/problem. I like to keep my nails just like the photo below, not that great for crimpers, but man are my nostrils ever clean. http://www.skinatlas.com/longnail.jpg

In reply to: I had my fingernails surgically removed. I surgically removed my own fingernails, and although it was quite a messy process, it really did help. I may need to do something aboutmy big toe nails too. My feet are so wide that wearing my climbing shoes pinches them to the point where the nails cut through the sides of the toe itself, especially when I need to jam them.

aaah the fickleness of discussion boards. a very common response to new threads is "search the archives, this has been discussed to death" so before posting my own thread i did. My question a very relavent one to rockclimbing is in essence do others expierence pain in your fingertips that can be avoided by having better selected the length of your fingernail. however it is attacked for being stupid, and this thread is told to die before it even reaches page 2. so i ask myself if it is stupid to ask "how can i experience less pain after a climb" on a forum dedicated to rockclimbing info. what are we here at rockclimbing.com wanting people to post about so i went to top ten stats http://www.rockclimbing.com/site/topten.php and found amoung the 10 most viewed and replied to posts the following * a word associacion game *sexual fantasies ("sex with whom") *2 pointless threads (we can make the longest thread, the person above you) *celebration of inebriation (jono's bar) *a request for pictures of women in as little as possible (women of rc.com) i am not bothered that those thread exist or even that they are high traffic but it seems worthy of introspection. that the above mentioned threads have become so celebrated, and that a thread that asks a sincere question about how to reduce discomfort in the practice of our beloved sport is so widely scorned. am i wrong that this site was birthed from a desire for people to discuss what ever topic seems to them to be relavent to climbing, and if you don't want to discuss a particular subject that is relevant to climbing such as "can fingernail length cause soarness" then why don't you go play a word association game or look at pictures and leave the thread be for someone else to discuss where does the need to belittle the value of this thread come from. especially in light of so many popular threads are very irrelavent to climbing.
