Just read this on the web: "In 1985, Tenzing is an alcoholic in poor health. From his bed at the Delhi Hospital, he calls Hillary, his only friend and regrets ever having climbed Everest. Tenzing dies before Hillary can see him again. Eleven years later, Tenzings son, Jamling climbed Everest as a member of the IMAX team. His father had forbidden him to try Mount Everest as long as he was alive: -"Why should you climb Everest? I have already done it for you!"." Does anyone know if this is true? And what were the reasons for him to do so??? Just curious... VERY curious!... [ This Message was edited by: polarwid on 2002-07-15 11:57 ]

That is a very good question. I would assume that only speculations can be brought out by it unless you speak to someone that knew Norgay. Perhaps, I would assume, that he didn't want his son to witness what he had in his life on Everest? Death and tragedy. Perhaps, as a father, he wanted to protect his son? All speculation. Probably a good guess though. I have read many, many books and couldn't think of a one that offers a real reason to this. Steve

Read Jamling Norgay's book, Touching My Father's Soul. He says what you quoted, essentially. Tenzing devoted many years and at least 7 attempts to Everest before finally succeeding, but he became a prisoner of his own success. He never sought the recognition, according to his son. It is also quite dangerous, as everyone knows.

Check out pro athletes for great info, articles, interviews, videos, and even email address (if you don't believe me take a peek at tiffany campbell's page). And just to make it easier...here's a link to Edmund Hillary's page which also has an article about the everest expedition with info on Tenzig.
