amsam, I agree, but I suck. I might just grunt on a 5.2! As for farrensbooks, No, gasping is okay. Especially when you escape a fall by the skin of your teeth!

I whine like a puppy when I'm losing momentum and getting freaked. It sure does waste energy, but hey, at least I feel like I'm climbing at my limit. Know what I mean?

A good tennis player grunts on the serve because he's using his abs mightily, and the crunch forces all the air from his lungs. A karate guy Hai-Yah!s his way through a stack of bricks by using the noise as part of his focus towards the sudden impact. Most of the noise I make climbing (recently, anyway) is wailing and bitching and moaning. Forcing all of the air from your lungs on a hard climbing move, so as to allow the tightest compaction of the entire torso, is perfectly legal. You should also grunt just as the rope grabs you when you whip.

I find I'll grunt when I'm really focused and pretty much out of energy, if I grunt I can get over that hump... well sometimes.

well, I´m a girl and I have to admit that I grunt too. I have it even on video camera now since a friend filmed my climb last week.. but I think grunting is ok, I dont do it on purpose, it just suddenly comes out when I put a lot of effort in. Mia

sure, I grunt from time to time. sometimes it is because I am on a tough move, or sometimes I am just tired. I don't know why, I doubt it helps me, it just escapes.

IF you aint grunting your not on a hard enough route.......calmy try to get threw the crux....Now, do it and grunt, its obviously better plus draws attention if you want a gal to see a neat move..........BEW

grunting is just an expression of intense exertion... comes hand in hand.. if you don't make noise, your not trying your hardest... show me one climber that dosn't scream every now and then..

Yes, but their is a limit to the grunting. Some people do it all of the time in the gym, others do it involutarily and some people do it to psych themselves up. As long as you are not making a scene all of the time. I think you are in the clear.
