Black Diamond Cam Date Codes

I recently read on the Black Diamond web site that the manufacture date is on the tag of each camalot. So I tried to interpret the tags on my cams but I'm not sure I got it right.

The numbers I have are 0082 and 0639, which I think meas the 82 day of 2000 and the 639th day of 2000, which would be 274th day of 2001. Does this sound correct?

No. But this does:

0082: 8th day of 2002

0639: 63rd day of 1999

0639 is the CE number code (ie. CE 0639). 0082 is the 82nd day of 2000.
CE is the European standards organization.
The date is on the cam, not on the sling.

Correction : 0082 is also a CE code.

Looks like I need to give more information:

I'm sitting here looking at 6 cams, all single stem. The older two are 3.5 and a 4.5 Camalot, both with an aluminum ring around the stem about half way up. Tag date code is 0082 so the 82 day of 2000 is probably about right.

I'm also sitting here with a 1, 2, 3, and 4.5. All maybe 2-2.5 years old, so around 2003'ish time frame. All have the date code 0639, clear as a bell. These cams have the plastic ring molded into the stem about half way up the stem.

The 0082 cams have the CE mark right above the 0082, and no other numbers. The 0639 cams have the CE mark right above the 0639, and no other numbers.

Inquiring minds want to know :)

CE is the European standards organization (similar to the UIAA). They specify the tests that the cam has to pass before BD can mark them with CE 0639 or CE 0082. The date on a BD cam is stamped into the metal at the top of the stem where the sling goes through or, for the newer C4s, on the backside of the colored lobe. BD uses the YDDD code where Y is last digit of year and DDD is day within year. Eg. 1234 is the 234th day of 2001.

Correction : replace "tests" with "quality control".

Inquiring minds fired up their googler, typed black diamond 0082 0639, and discovered that 0639 and 0082 are both CE notified body numbers and have nothing to do with dates.

notified body numbers do not refer to tests, but rather the entity that did them. 0639 is who monitors their quality control practices, while 0082 are the guys who get to sit around all day and break stuff. Text below is from my earlier link:

CE 0639: This mark is the CE mark of
conformity and indicates that Black
Diamond and this product meet the
requirements of Article 11B of the
Personal Protective Equipment Directive
(89/686/EEC). Black Diamond is an ISO
9001 certified company. Certification and
monitoring of Black Diamond's Quality
Management System are performed by
AFAQ-ASCERT International, 116 avenue
Aristide Briand, 92225 BAGNEUX France,
notified body number 0639. Certification
and monitoring of Black Diamond's PPE
products are performed by APAVE
Lyonnaise, BP3-69811 TASSIN CEDEX
France, notified body number 0082.

[edited for typo. you'd think I would spell "quality control" right]

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the replies. My bad, it looks like I was looking in the wrong place.

So I looked on the stem and sure enough, there are some numbers there, I got

9209 209th day of 1999 ?
2128 128th day of 2002
9201 201st day of 1999
1187 187th day of 2001
1306 306th day of 2001
1332 332nd day of 2001

Those dates all sounds reasonable to me.

Thanks again.
