I am moving to Italy from August 21 to December 20....4 quality months of climbing in Europe. Is anyone interested in showing me around and hitting for rocks a lot. I sport climb around a high 10 low 11 and can comfortable lead 9's and some 10s. But I want to continue to challenge myself and get on more and more rock. PM me if you are interested and I would love to contact you and talk about climbing and everything. I am so excited to get on some European ROCK.....Hope to hear from someone soon. Katie

Hi Katie! you'll be in Italy in the right season! :) Where will you be staying? As I learned from my American buddies, most Europeans have a slightly different idea of how far the drive for a weekend of climbing should be... So if you'll be visiting the north of Italy (and you should, coz that's where the crags are), don't hesitate to drop me a pm. I live quite close to a number of great sports climbs, and also the Dolomites are sort of around the corner (although I'm NOT an experienced trad leader). If you're around Milan, you might want to contact bellaitalia in this forum, she's from the states, too, and a great person to hang out with. If you're around Torino, you might want to contact chrtur in this forum, he's from Sweden, and a great person to hang out with. ;-) Bye, Heiko

I'm in the same boat. I'll be studying in Rome from August through December and I won't have a car. Anyone know if I can get to any good sport crags with public transportation?

Hey guys, you don't wanna hijack katies thread here, do you? ;-) In the Arco area (north of Italy that is, near the Garda lake) and the Sarca valley, there are places that can be reached by bus. In fact there are several climbs directly next to the city of Arco. Also it should be possible to hook up with people if you stay at the campsite there. Best, H.

Heiko, nice lines for me  I wish I could say the same thing about you  Katie, as Heiko told you could give me a pm if you are near Torino but more general in either the region called Piemonte, Aosta or Finale. The closer to Torino the better... /Christian

Heiko Thanks so much for all the beta. I will actually be in Rome, which is rather than i'd like from all the crags as well as from all of you guys. It sounds like you are all farther north, how far is that exactly....and is the train cheap? I was thinking I could make it a weekend trip or so. Well, now I am so excited to go over there but yet I have another month or so before I get over there. Lets keep in touch and talking about the rocks, because now I am totally pumped. What is the rock like over there? Have any of you climbed in America? Are you all Italian? Katie

In reply to: In reply to: Are you all Italian?Katie  hahhahaha Heiko's a little German guy with glasses.  On a more serious note, he's about as nice as they come. You'll have a blast climbing with him. :!: :D girldrifter............. we should have a serious drinking competition in Fonti tomorrow  Katie, "the north" of Italy is around 5-6 hrs from Rome... the trains are somewhat cheap I think. Milan might be a little closer. The rock up here is limestone ("stinky" limestone, as girldrifter would say), and the formations vary a lot from area to area. You can have mostly everything, except maybe for 500ft cracks ;-)

if you don't mind hitchhicking, in Arco is quite easy getting a lift, just show off your rope and you'll get a ride easily. To travel cheap by train try to avoid the IC and EC, take rather an IR or E which are slower but defenatly cheaper. Avoi R if you can. IC, EC, IR and E are the kind of train. Have a look on: www.trenitalia.com it tell you everything about. Another place is Val di Mello (www.valdimello.it) which has a shuttle that bring you in form town. have fun matteo

In reply to: In reply to: Are you all Italian? Katie    are you scared? She should be! Katie, just pm me if you want the 'low-down' on all these freaks. By the way, of all the places mentioned above, Val di Mello is the one I recommend the most. Beautiful place, beautiful granite, laid-back people, and the bus-ride to the crag is optional (it's only about a 2km hike from the camp site). I've got some pics in my profile... :D

Hi, Based in Vaud region of Switzerland - if you ever make it that far north, let me know. I'm looking for more opportunities and excuses for getting out there climbing rocks! I'm more or less limited to the weekends, however, I have a car, rope, draws ... and willing to drive to meet up with people. Best regards, Ulrich NB: I'm Danish

hi katie, i'm an american living in milan. if you're going to be up in the area, let me know. milan is about 4.5 hours by train from rome. i can't compete with heiko, living in trento right next to the dolomites, but there are tons of great places to climb within a two hour drive of milan. and i have a car. :D -sarah
