I've been climbing for a while now and have developed overly excercised upper back area. I used to do alot of pull ups on the finger board and other intensive shoulder and back routines like the backer ladder to build up my lock off strength. I know it sounds a little freaky but I have seen alot of other climbers with the same condition. Having a so so posture doesnt help much either\. My neck always seems to be pushing forward and not straight up like a normal homosapien. I have alot of tension and tend to strain. After a long or stressful day at work I feel very tight and knotted up between my shoulder blades just below my neck. Has anyone else on this site felt these symptoms. and do you know the best way to relieve them. Possibly more stretching or should I run down to the chiroquackter?

Forget the quackapractors. If you are having muscle related problems, go to a good sports oriented physical therapy clinic. If this is causing you problems sleeping, or at work you could probably get your doc to refer you to PT so that insurance would cover. A good PT can show you exercises and stretches that will help strengthen and balance the muscles that hold your head up.

I try to focus on good posture when sitting at the office, and when belaying. Two times when I tend to get in a really bad slouch. Also, try the theracane for those knots. The thing is so awesome, I've started to bring it on climbing trips.

Basic stretch for your upper back and shoulders. Grab the heal of your foot with your hand on the same side. Now gently straighten your leg as much as you can. Repeat on the other side. I had problems with the same area knotting and hurting until I was shown this stretch. If you continue to have problems even after ibuprofrin and stretching...you may want to see a specialist. J
