Hi, I'm heading over to Krakow on the 25 July. I'm from Ireland and climb up to E3 6a. On Sport I climb up to 6c. (French) Anybody know where the nearest climbing area is? Also if there are any friendly Polish people out there wanting to meet a really nice Irish guy :D then contact me and lets climb some rock :P Rob

Hi, Krakow is a good choice if you're thinking of climbing in Poland...and also is my home town. Unfortunately, I have just moved to Munich and am now in a similar situation... great place but no climbing friends and no clue where to go... In Krakow's surrondings are rocks (north) or mountains (SOUTH) - depending on your fancy. Near Krakow most famous among climbers are valleys: Bolechowicka, Kobylanska and Bedkowska. Each of them has at least 100 bolted routes. Rock is limestone, and most easy routes got a bit worn out (slippery) - therefore I would try less popular regions or more amibtious routes. It will be necessary to familiarize with Kurtyka grading system (standard in Poland) (see link). I would strongly advise to visit an artificial wall RENI SPORT co-run by Renata, a world top climber. This place is visited by champions, regular climbers and beginners; atmosphere is friendly and there's a high probability that someone will speak English there. You can climb there, meet people, post a personal ad, or even spend a night... There are also other climbing walls, e.g. (KORONA), in Dunajewskiego street. If you prefer mountains, Tatry is obvious (and the only !) choice, 100km from Krakow (buses from the temporary Railway Station every hour or so).
