When we were in banff last week, we heard some other climbers at the table next to us talking about a climbing accident close to Banff a few days earlier. . . anyone know anything about this?

that would have been the obvious answer wouldn't it . . .

Honestly, I didn't want to disturb them - they were a big stinky group and I knew all they wanted was food and beer - it'd be like disturbing a Grizzly after the kill . . .

you just shouldn't get between a dirty/stinky climber and it's food!

Ive been that dirty/stinky climber . . . normally the stench is enough to keep people away. . . but then all the grunting while chewing works too!

The parks chopper from Banff was called to the bugaboos when we were there last week. A guy got his knee stuck in an OW on the Kain Route. (don't ask me how) He was not injured or in any danger. CMH first came with their chopper dispatching 2 guides on the glacier below who got to the climber at the same time we did while we were decending. Then a hilti, some dish soap, and warm clothes hot drinks etc. were dropped by rope to the scene. Then came the parks chopper with a rescue crew that were dropped one by one onto the scene by rope, the climber was quickly excavated. Then the climber, his partner, and all the rescue team were plucked off one by one, set onto the glacier and flown to the cmh lodge. Quite the air show in the end, hours of flight time $$$$$. Can only imagine that the parks crew was bored and looking for a training exercise. And we can only hope they didn't have to destroy the rock to get the knee out. I never heard what they ended up doing but it was fast so I doubt they "modified" the rock.

WOW the Bugs have been getting all the action - I was out there when the fatal injury happened the week before.

but the accident I (over) heard about sounded like it was in the climbing areas closer to Banff - not backcountry stuff.

Two climbers were killed in an avalanche on Mount Robson, on or about July 29th.
