Meteor Shower on Whitehorse!

There were several Meteor Showers in North Conway this weekend past! A.K.A rockfall!

1st on Cathedral: We got bombed while waiting at the start of Toecrack from a party doing Standard Route (god I hate standard route!) Several small projectiles whizzing by us at ludicrous speed. I sort of expected it while standing in the standard route bowling alley.

Whitehorse: This was the grand daddy of rock falls that I have witnessed. While we were traversing from the dike route over to S.Geffen route, we noticed a large two foot long by 2 inches thick piece of loose rock sixty feet above us. It appeared to have a Wiley Coyote wedge that was preventing it from falling. I couldn't see the string attached to the wedge from our vantage point ;-) A group was in the process of rapping just after we had cleared the blast zone, when the rappers dislodged this death flake! They started yelling rock frantically. Bits and pieces of shrapnel (some as big as large dinner plates) started coming off and flying in all directions. By the time the fragment got to the bottom the width of the blast field was perhaps 60 feet across. After the dust had settled, it appeared that no one was hurt/hit.

The perfect ending to an exciting weekend in North Conway! Anyone else have rock fall stories they would like to share?

Dan

Wait until you get bottles whizzing at you at Cathedral. That's always fun.

The north face of Half Dome is one of the classic sites for tourist-trundled terror. A good-sized rock in a 2,000-foot freefall sounds like a runaway propeller going past your head.
