I drink a gallon of water a day when I am not climbing. I can easily drink way more while spending a day at the crags. As for what other types to drink I wouldn't know I just drink water, water, water and more water.... Being hydrated is very, very important!!!

Hydration is very important... When you sweat, you lose that liquid from your blood volume. Less volume means less to reach your extremities, adding to climbers "pumping out" earlier. Keep that blood volume up, and you can climb longer. Carbohydrates (sugar) add fuel to burn, and salt inhibites sweating and urination, thus retaining the liquids consumed. Great recipe from a climbing mag... Ceap-o-rade: 1 gal water 1 packet unsweetened KoolAid 1 tspn Salt I use this recipe in 1/2 gal Gatoraid bottles strung w/ webbing, and frozen solid the nightbefore for a hot day at the crags. Always cold. This is basically Koolaid mixed 1/2 strength with a dash of salt. Be sure to use white sugar, as it is easily proccessed by the body, whereas high froctose corn syrup is not as easily metabolized by the body.

A guide on Mount Shasta once told me (in a thick Scottish accent) "If your not pissing every 30 minutes your not drinking enough water, and you want it look like one of your crappy American beers. If it's the color of a good Welsh bitter you'd better start dinking more" I got the point and have been drinking like a fish ever since.

how important is air? I try and pre hydrate a few days before any day of climbing, infact I'm gonna go hang out at the water cooler right now! Drink lots and lots of water and then drink some more. I became dehydrated on a long climb once and I could hardly get doww, never again will I let that happen to me!

Hydration is important to keep your muscles moving, but more important to keep your brain working. One of the first effects of dehydration is impaired thinking which is definitely dangerous in a climbing situation. Hydration is also very important in recovery so keep hydrating on the way home from the crag. Here's the kicker, too much water is bad. On a bike ride last year my girlfriend and I drank nothing but water. I started to feel sick but she was getting bad headaches and nausea. She was in the early stages of hyponatremia... basically, water poisioning. Your body needs sugars and salt and crap along with the water otherwise you'll just get sick. Juice, gatorade, cheaporade, lemonade... anything to supplement that water intake. Btw: Adam's cheap-o-rade recipe tastes better if you add a can of mountain dew, then you also get that little caffiene kick The happy mountaineer Always pees clear.

Hydration is one of the most important things, it can really affect your climbing!! when your mouth gets dry and you can tell that you are thirsty.. you are already extremely dehydrated! remember people can survive for days on water alone... that should explain how important it is
