Which clip stick should this washed-up trad climber buy for sport climbing? It should fit on my telescoping window-washing pole.

The Grappler looks pretty cool in their videos.

Please advise.

Forget those plastic doo-hickies. A good old fashioned spring clamp and a couple hose clamps will do fine. Not to mention the reduced cost over the plastic wonders.

The clamp is totally awesome, so if you want cheapness, go for it.

The Squid is the best that I've used if you want to spend money on it though. But I think the clamp beats it for everything except taking draws off (which is pretty tricky with a clamp, though I do know some people who are pretty good at it).

So here is my stick clip. Just a spring clamp attached by two hose clamps to the pole. Two screws through the hose clamps into the pole to prevent the clamp working its way off the end. I'd recommend removing the plastic jaw pads and wrapping the jaws with duct tape or hockey tape. The plastic pads just pop off anyway after a few uses. I started with something very similar to this and then tried the plastic do-hickies but they just did not stand up to the use or abuse they were subjected to. They are plastic after all. Anyhoo, here's a pic with a Petzl biner in the clamp.

http://www.rockclimbing.com/...p.cgi?Detailed=60529

The screw link in the next pic is used to hold the clamp open for retrieving draws by latching the link through the eye-bolt. By adjusting the length of the eye-bolt one can tailor the width of the clamp opening to suit verious biner gate diameters. Mine is set to accomodate anything from Petzl biners to older thicker diameter gates like on my Bluewater biners. This sort of requires a "knack" but I figured it out pretty fast. Even draws on overhung routes are not a problem. Beats the crap out of looking for a suitable size stone to hold the jaws open.

So I hope this gives you another alternatine to mull over.

Nice pics, cam.

That quicklink thing looks cool, but I'm not sure I understand how it works.

How do you remove a draw? Do you tie the rope to the quicklink so you can pull it and make the clamp close down on the gate?

Thanks guys! Cool pix.

One of my partners (dustinap) brought his stick along on last week's sport climbing trip. He had both clamp & Squid with him, but we only used the clamp. It worked great for clipping, and I was also able (very carefully) to use it to grab the rope as it was dangling from a high first draw after a climb. Pulling the rope and reclipping wasn't an appealing option, since we couldn't reach that bolt with the stick anyway.

This thread will quickly become, 'if you're too p*ssy to climb it, don't climb it.' Stick clipping is for those with no commitment level. But, so is sport climbing... so I say use a tree branch (already dead) with some tape (which you pack out), or just sack up, or toprope (which you're already basically doing).

Heh heh. Well we didn't stick clip everything.

Here's justice about to make the first clip on Heresy at Smith:

Clamp or Squid - I use both. The Squid takes some practice, but works great. Its best feature is the easy removal of draws. I can remove draws with a regular clip, but a squid works easier. Thankfully, I don't do that too often.

Fracture, thanks man.

Squeeze the clamp and hook the screw link to the eye bolt. The screw link holds the clamp open just enough to allow the gate of the biner to fit between the jaws of the clamp without actually pinching the gate. Then you give the pole a twist to open the gate and the tension of the gate spring combined with the twisting action opens the gate and causes the biner to rotate upside down and pop off the hanger. It does not work very well at all with notched biners but if you fight with it long enough it will come off. Notchless biners just roll right off. The second pic in my previous post shows the gate of the biner between the jaws of the clamp.

Removing a draw with a clamp? I'd like to see it too. Here's are photos & video of removing a draw with a Grappler: http://www.rockindustry.com/remove.htm

Thanks for the idea, cam. Maybe I'll give it a try.

The only way I'd seen to remove draws with a clamp (using bight of rope) is freakin' hard. I do know a few people who have practiced it enough to be pretty good, though...
