I'm looking into bying a porta-ledge and fly. I want to use it in Yosemite as well as in alpine and artic enviroments (bad weather). Which porta-ledge/fly to use ? What is your experience ? Will Black Diamonds ledge and fly do the job ? Whats the best around ? Is A5 history, I cant find thier WEB page.

The Metolius Bomb Shelter is... well... The Bomb!!! The frame is very sturdy and the deck is really tough looking. The fly also seems very well made.

I own some A5 gear...bought it off of John Middendorf when he was closing shop here in Flagstaff. The stuff I have is antiquated but totally bomber. Everything later is post Middendorf era and is made by TNF...I'm pretty sure anyways...and then again, they might have dropped the line altogether. John, you out there? Care to share anymore light on this subject anyone?

Yeah grid, A5 is now a North Face brand. I hear the new ones are as good as the old A5 though. You want to try http://www.fishproducts.com Fish gear is just as good or better than the big names and usually costs alot less.

I have the BD double Skylounge, and love it. It sets up real quick, plenty of room and has a BOMBER rain fly. Hope this helps.

My partner has a double A5 its nice, but sucks with two, unless you like spooning with someone other than your girl (Brett it too hairy:)).
I like the price of the Fish ledges.
My only advice wold be buy a double and sleep alone on it, it will be far more comfortable and the additional 4lbs is not that much for the trade off of a good nights sleep.

i'd agree with the Bomb shelter, i've got one and its the business, the spreader bar makes it really easy to sleep on, only problem at the moment is they haven't made any fly's as far as i'm aware. i'm waiting for the first production run to get mine, hopefully it will be done in time for my trip to the valley in Sept. by all accounts they're going to be really good but i'll hold back until i've tried it.

They sell flys now. At least, I haven't actually seen one, but I saw one in the catalog for this coming fall.

First off they always made and still make Bombshelter flys. Anyway, I did a little reading on the A5 ledge and that thing looks sweet. It's double the width of the BD and weighs about the same. It might not be as easy to set up, but this thing is huge!! It also had bed-tentioners, BD does not.
BD double
Bed size: 28" X 84" (wrong spec)
Haul size: 43" X 9"
Wt: 16lb 8 oz.
Fly wt: 4lb 3oz. (rain fly is bomber!!!!)
Price: $435, Fly $285
Cliff Cabana
Bed size: 51" X 86" !!!!!!!!!!!

My friends and I have the A5 Cliff Cabana with the Diamond Fly. Got it off a guy who used to put up routes in Alaska. I've only used it in Zion and never evven took the fly-it is pretty bulky and heavy and is kind of a pain to set up as you have to set the ledge up inside the diamond fly. My buddies used the fly in some pretty good storms early season on the Streaked wall and said it was bomber though. It even has enclosed storage space under the ledge.
The cliff cabana sleeps two real comfortable (not as comfortably as one, but I am a heavy sleeper and had plenty of room) and will even sleep three if you can talk someone into sleeping "downstairs" in the hammock underneath.
It is not as easy to set up as some of the others but the deck stays alot tighter than a BD or a Pika for instance and it is long enough that I don't catch my shins on the edge all night long. I recommend the cliff cabana but get the expedition fly istead of the diamond, it is lighter and easier to set up.

Black diamond portas are the sh&t!!!!-They set up so easy,I don't even use a belay seat no more now that I have the BD single!!!!----30 second setup,for real!!!

Gramicci….If u can find'em…A pain in the butt to set …but once set they are the bomb and the roomiest of all ask Aid312 he will get it if he could find one (double) he will get it in hart beat...I own one

The BD Double HAS to be wider than 28".

Oh yeah Wes, I just took a tape to my Krustyledge and it is 33" wide... And we know your's is wider than that!
Isn't the BD single 28"?
At 33" the Krustyledge is the widest single I know of.

I bought a BD double but the one I got had a bent bolt on it. I had to sent it back and now I don't have a ledge to take up the Chief with me!
