Correct me if I'm wrong, but when I went to turtle rock, there was a sign asking you to not climb on the rock because of some indigenous tribe's religious something or another. It said it was illegal to climb there. Maybe it changed, that was 2 years ago, so who knows.

It says "Please Don't Climb Here"...it says nothing about it being illegal. There is not a penal code reference or anything. No one cares if you climb there. I climbed there for about once to three times a month for over a year. Not once was I approached by anyone. Native Americans say almost all rocks have religious significance, and it would be ridiculous to allow them to take all rocks and forbid people to climb on them. It is on public property and is free to the use of all people. Just treat the area with much respect. Clean up trash you find there. Pack home your tape, and don't use too much chalk. Have fun.

I am Native American(mother's full-blooded Mescalero Apache) and I don't see what the big deal is granted I don't know much about the historics of Turtle Rock. If it's so damn important why is there upper class WASP housing all around it? Why are the locals allowed to jump all over it?(When I was there people were running to the top of it and so forth.)
Anyways, I don't know why I'm writing all this because it really is a shitty place to climb. Don't even bother going.
Spiral out...

No, there's a Turtle Rock in California. Different from the one you're used to.

... Having grown up just down the road from this boulder, i was stoked to later find a couple problems on it. There is actually a very hard problem going straight up the overhanging face of this rock, this list says v8 but that rating is clearly arbitrary (as it says "might not go" next to it). I've scoped this closely and i think that line would go for a strong boulderer, besides that it just a cool lookin boulder : )
