Something someone once taught me a long time ago was eye, hand, crack coordination. Walk up to a crag with features you can protect. Turn your back to the crag (be sure to have a rack of doubles slung on a rack). Quickly turn and face the feature. Place 3 pieces as fast as you can. Evaluate the placement and the time it took you. Start out with wires (helps refine the EHC coordination). Once you can slam wires then start with tiny Aliens. See if you can lower your time it take to locate place and clip the gear. You can go big by testing the equalizing gear and then hang from it. If a piece blows you'll feel it and remember why it blew. It helped me with gear placments after about 5 charley horses to the ass.
