Ok, so I read the thread about staying tyed in while in your sleeping bag, and I got to thinking.... Has anyone ever rolled off their portaledge in the middle of the night and been caught mid air by their tether? Or maybe came close? I know when I sleep on the edge of this cliff near my house, nomatter how deeply I sleep, I conciously know when i'm getting too close to the edge and wakeup. Sometimes I even wake up scared shitless cuz I have little dreams that I rolled off. So has anyone ever really rolled off? Oh and how about couples? can you have a lil fun with your harnesses still on? or do you just take your chances in the heat of the moment? Flame away, but I'm seriously curious about some rolling out of bed stories.....

I work on a ropes course in Idaho and we have a thin platform that participants wait on before we send them down a zip line. It is about 35 ft above the ground and is only as wide as a thermarest. I slept up there one night, and everytime I wanted to roll over, my body woke myself up to do the manuver. I was tied in of course and the rope coming outta my bag didn't bother me, but the freakin molded gear loops on my harness did! Jeeze, My next harness will have floppy old school loops for sure!

Well, I remeber that I fell out of bed once or twice as a kid...... My body didn't wake me until after it was committed to the fall.... Maybe it knows more now.

I heard of someone who tied in at night with a daisy around their waste - that's it. I've never had the chance to sleep in a ledge...but a daisy??? I dunno. Brent

I've spent a few nights on ledges and in hammocks, and I've always woken up to turn over, and I've never heard of anyone falling onto their tether

Yeah, I find myself to be very aware or my surroundings in my sleep when I need to be... such as on a ledge, or in a shady situation, but when I'm comfortable, such as in my house or at a good friends, I'll sleep through anything! It's amazing how the human body works. So, I think I need to practice this "fun" stuff on the ground before I try it on a portaledge. Any females looking to acquire a new skill? or maybe there's an experienced woman that would be willing to "show me the ropes"!

In reply to: Why do you sleep on the edge of a cliff? usually because there is no where else to sleep at the time.

I always tie a webbing swami on and take my harness off to sleep on my ledge. Way more comfortable. As far as rolling off your ledge, ain't gonna happen. Even the best built ledge sags in the middle, it's pretty hard to roll up hill and then around the webbing straps holding the thing. Also i'm usually so zonked from climbing and hauling that when I pass out in bed I wake up in the exact same position I fell asleep in. If you're not that tired, you could have gotten another pitch in that day. Cheers

I remember one of JL's stories, about a fellow wanting to get romantic with his woman on a big wall. Seems the fellow tied a tether around his ankle to solve the "harness or not" dilemma. Then in the midst of the action, he took a tumble out of the portaledge and found himself hanging by his ankle over the abyss!
