After a little more hanging around on the weekend in my "rinky-dink sport harness" - I nearly lost circulation in my legs!

Man - those harnesses can be killers!

So now as I delicately negotiate my move into the aid world - what are the best harnesses?? I have seen the 2 beefy options by Yates, and also the Fish alternative, have I missed any? What have been your experiences?

Thanks for the input!

Fishy.

I've got the Yates shield harness, its beefy and comfortable. My legs do not loose circulation in it! It could use some larger gear loops but I guess that is what the chest harness is for and Yates takes the cake there as well!
For my trad Harness I use and Arc Teryx Targa I love it!

You sport climbing weenie. Serves you bloody right.

I use the Yates Big Wall Harness. It is big and beefy and as comfy as you are going to get.

While I don't like the buckle closure system, I can live with it for the additional benefits it offers - superb gear loops, and a built-in hammer holster on both sides which is good if you are a lefty like me.

I am not familiar with Fish's harness, or anyone else's big wall harness for that matter. I bought a Yates in 96, and when it wore out after about five years, I bought another because of the obvious product improvements. The newest one is better still, and is highly recommended by Dr. Piton.

Hey Radistrad, we use the same harnesses for the same purposses. Ha. Anyway, ya the Yates "Shield" is the way to go. I heard that the bigger one is more for larger people, but if Pete uses it that may not be true.

I just bought my Yates. I would call them to see if they still make them. I'm sure they do.

I used to have a Yates Big Wall.
Now I have a Yates Shield and I like it better than the Big Wall.
I think it's more comfortable than my Big Wall was.
If Yates stopped making the Shield I'll be VERY surprised. I think it was their best selling harness.

Hey I just got a Mountain Tools cataloge in today and they have the Shield for sale. I thought so, I mean, why would Yates stop making it?! It's kinda like BD not making Camalots anymore...just won't happen.

RE THE SHIELD...

YEah, I am sure...come on now...

No, you guys are right and I was wrong.

They stopped making the El Cap Harness...
That's the deal. But, no one was talking about that harness, so it doesn't matter.

I wanted the El Cap Harness because it was slightly less beefy then the other harnesses they were making. Instead, I got the Big Wall.

On the topic of the big wall, I have one, and was wondering if it is safe to use the two big loops when performing a hanging belay. I think they are rated to 2000 lb, and have used them, but am looking for a warm fuzzy from yall to tell me I should continue this practice or not...

I need a wall harness myself, but damn that Yates looks like a crag pack turned inside out. I have serius doubts about any free climbing while wearing the thing. Anyone have any experience with the fish? Oh to hell with independant reviews. Russwalling, should we buy the fish wall harness and why?

biggernhell, the yates Big Wall is not too beefy, I climb just as hard with it on as with my spiffy archteryx job.

Just to beat this topic to death...

You could also try getting or making a belay seat if you don't want to buy a new harness. A friend of mine made one out of a cut up hockey stick and some nylon fabric. It was sure more comfortable than hanging out in my harness for hours at a time while he lead.

On my first attempt at a wall, the guy I was climbing with brought a foldup chair that he took from his dad's backyard. That was also comfortable to belay in, but not so comfortable to sleep in apparently and a bit cumbersome on the approach. It was an upright one, not a reclining one, so he slept with his head wedged into some slings all night. Ouch.

I have Wes/smithclimbers old Yates Big Wall, and have tried the Sheild (very briefly) and I would say the Sheild is the better way to go, by far!
As Pete said the buckles system is not that easy to use, especially to thread through the many things required for soloing "the better way".
The double buckle system of the shield seems to me the "better way" to go!

And those of you who know me know that Yates is the only brand of wall gear I want!
In fact does anyone want to buy a pair of Metolius adj. daisies?
I'm gonna get the Yates , for a motorcycle guy like me the familiarity with the buckles is worth it... besides it's not like I ever really need to be able to lengthen my daisy with one hand.

I climbed in the old Yates 5.14 for years until I wore it out. That name was a joke because it was a big beefy wall harness .

I move from place to place to much to carry two or three different types of harnesses.

I have come to love my Misty Moutain Cadalac(sp). It is a great all-arounder. Enough padding for walls but I can still wear it for cragging.

For me, upturned gear-loops are a definate requirement!

Quoth justsendingits: "Krusty,I am a motorcycle guy also. Just got back from Yos.---rode my bike(BMW) round trip.(5000 MI.)"

May I ask just how you were able to carry an entire big wall rack and pig with you while riding a motorcycle?
