I was wondering. Does anyone have any climbing role models and if so who? My climbing role models aren't necessarily top climbers, but climbers who can balance climbing with the rest of their life, don't get too obsessive, have a diverse range of interests and have a great love of the outdoors. You've probably never heard of any of them, most of them are friends of mine......James Wilson, a climbing shop owner, father annd husband, ornnothologist, climber and who fights tirelessly for Wildernness protection. Bob Harrinngton, excellent all-round climber (alpinist, boulderer, sport climber) father, wit and full time hydrologist for our County. Alan James, husband, father of three, climber, guidebook/web guru, excellent climber and drinker of fine Belgium beers. .....and mi Scottish mate, Jerry Handren who is still going strong at 40+ in the alpine and sport arenas. If I was to choose a professional climber it would be someone like Peter Croft or Lynn Hill and the Brits Kevin Thaw and Leo Houlding : top notch all-round climbing atheletes and humble people, know how to have a good time, they smile a lot and are very professional. Anyone got any climbing role models? Mick The Good, The Great annd The Awesome http://www.rockfax.com/shop/usa_shop/croft.html [ This Message was edited by: polarwid on 2002-10-15 11:14 ]

Two: one is Alex Lowe, not just because of his ability and accomplishments, but also because of his generous character and ability to inspire; the other is Stephen Parrott - a good friend and belay who is probably one of the craziest (and shaggiest) MFers to ever play on gritstone - for always helping me to push my limits.

Yeah I also have a couple..... 1) Dan Fost - Sick climber.Best in Newfoundland and has such very down to earth personality. 2) Greg Foote - Another sick climber who has such a great attitude. Greg is about my height (maybe a bit taller) so its always cool to watch him climb whereas Dan is tall and lanky. Both are incredible to watch....but thats just my opinion.

Harding, Steckler, Anker, passthepitonspete (because he is cool and kicks serious aid ass), and most of all, myself. Steve I'd also like to add Twight. Definitely Marc Twight. [ This Message was edited by: wildtrail on 2002-07-29 11:11 ]

in no particular order: Lynn Hill (short girls are cool), Pete for keeping me sane on the rock (or close enough), and my friend Andria for her cool head and fearlessness. :-D

John Joline, my first teacher, is about 50 and climbs 5.11 or 12 trad. He is a great person who has found a way to keep climbing seriously throughout his life and who is selfless in his desire to teach the sport to people like me. Cool guy.

I would have to say Dean Potter, Ron Kauk, and Peter Croft. They all are laid back, climb hard and have made thier own styles.

Walter Bonatti Charlie Porter Also Alan Steck, not for what he's done, but for what he's doing today and his attitude while doing it at seventy-something and post heart attack. A couple of years ago a friend was climbing with Steck when it appeared that, at 70+ and post heart-attack, he would have to do a gearless bivy after a long day. As the realization dawned, my friend asked "Alan, how do you feel?" Steck replied: "Stoic". I think that's the thing that I admire about all those guys - they just went out and did it and if things went wrong and they didn't have the right gear and so on and so on, they did it anyway. Tom

Dan osman, not exactly as a role model but there's something about what he's done that deserves admiration. My friend Oliver fell over 40 feet while soloing in the south of France and lived to tell the tale and is still climbing hard in squamish right now. Not exactly a role model but pretty impressive nonetheless. If you read this Oli, keep it up, I'll teach you a few tricks when you head back home he, he, he.

My role model is Doosh, who actually posted a picture of himself and his muscles (in another forum) as proof that he could climb a V9 boulder route. HILARIOUS.

I repect different climbers for different reasons. Ed Viesters: for staying alive for his wife and family although he's been in some incredible situations Alex Lowe (r.i.p.): for his attitude and training ethic. Alex Huber: for freeing routes most people can't aid. Dan Osman (r.i.p.): for dealing with fear and commitment on a level that almost no other has. Abbott King: for being my friend and teaching me about climbing. (you created a monster dude)
