saw these today. like aliens only better. due out next year. sorry, no pic, but the have three lobes. the middle one has a large surface area--kinda reminded me of the old splitter cam lobes, but that's the only thing they have in common. these cams looked so solid, like they would last forever. very flexible with completely enclosed lower section, where the cables are. oh yeah, each lobe gets its own spring loaded cable. very small profile. they looked even more solid than aliens. very wow looking. they are sure to grab alot of attention when they come out next year. btw i am not an employee of bd nor do i have any association with them. just thought i'd share some good news.

Thanks Steve. Jeffski, if you haven't already read it, here's a link to all sorts of fun new toys: Adventures in Gearland.

jung since you actually saw then and touched them i assume maybe you can give us some idea how well they might actually hold up. my first thought when i saw them was that maybe that rubber looking encloser might not hold up very well to rubbing against the rock.

i dunno, they look super bulky to me (not heavy...). They just seem unessasarily oversized in places, almost like an SUV w/ all of that plastic making it look bigger than it actually is. ALIENS FOREVER! word.

Anybody figured out what that middle cable is for yet? It doesn't seem to do anything. Also, it looks like BD finally discovered that you can sling cams on spectra. Now all we need is for Petzl to get around to discovering spectra...

In my opinion, it looks like the center cable is there for stability. I can't say for sure because this is the first time I have seen this cam.

In reply to: Anybody figured out what that middle cable is for yet? It doesn't seem to do anything. Also, it looks like BD finally discovered that you can sling cams on spectra. Now all we need is for Petzl to get around to discovering spectra... I don't think that's Spectra. I think it's just fancy colored nylon. I hope I'm wrong and will keep my fingers crossed that BD stumbles across Spectra soon.

I posed the rubber question to BD when I was in SLC and they don't seem too worried about it. I'll come back to that in a second. As for the middle cable, if you look closely at this pic... http://www.rockclimbing.com/...p.cgi?Detailed=59342 ...you can see that it stops at the top of the rubber sleeve. Above the trigger -- on all three cables -- you'll see springs that control the cam articulation. This is pretty different than most every (or is it every? I don't know) other cam on the market. Usually the S in SLCD is a spring that wraps around the axle of the unit, not the stem. Back to the rubber... I'm more curious about the exposed springs on the three cables than the rubber, which to me seems pretty truck. Specifically, what happens to those springs if the cam is loaded after being buried -- exactly spring deep -- in a sharp horizontal? Don't waorry about the rubber getting in the way, either. It's very low profile. Anyway, don't read me wrong. I'm not speculating on performance at all. I haven't used these things other than in plexiglass and, hell, these aren't even production models. By the time they hit your rack, they could look very different. PS: landgolier, good question about the middle cable. but I'm afraid I don't have an answer. all_that_is_rock, stay tuned for the new Ultralight TCUs from Metolius. You can check them out in the article I linked to above. They address precisely the issue that has you ready to move on.
