Old webbing for a collar
Small sections of old rope with big knots tied in the middle for chewie toys
An old haulbag with some sort of stablizing frame inside could become a doghouse!!

how do you know when to retire things such as a hex, or nut? the stopper on the necklace looked fine (to me maybe thats why i am not tradding yet....)
you could take old webbing and weave it in a chair frame for the seat part.
does that make sense?

Hate to admit it, but my clothes line (solar-powered laundry dryer) is anchored on one end by a cinch-type rivet hanger over a wood screw on a patio post. The other end is attached to my apricot tree via a clove hitch.

If you cut it right, old harnesses can be made into makeshift gear slings for lead climbing. Or just cut the leg loops off and make a sweet belt. I think that counts as 2 different ones!

make a mug or salt and pepper shakers out of old big hexes - havent tried this but with some machining and welding skills it could be done.
use buckles from old harnesses for .... belt buckles!!!
used cams, nuts, and hexes you could also send to me. I do accept donations.

Okay, these ideas are great! I thought of another one that will bring us to 40... so we're making pretty good progress...
I don't remember what they're called, but does anyone remember those old wooden russian... dolls? They fit inside each other, and pull appart in the middle... ??
Seems to me, curved and regular hexes would fit inside each other well... a little primer and a good artist and you have your self the climbers version of whatever those dolls are called... And if you paint numbers/shapes/letters on them, they would double as a sort of learning tool for kids. (Same principal as that pyramid of doughnuts, only much more expensive...)
I guess that might count as two, but I'll wait on the russian dolls till someone finds out the real name, then I'll give them the credit!

I though of a few more... then I gotta hit the sack.
42. Hex candle sets (fill with wax, or use as holders)
43. Paper weights
44. Old crash pads make great camp chairs (probably a common use anyway.)
45. Old crash pads make great “changing tables” (I have a new daughter...)
46. This is the truth... I actually used a piece of the high density foam from my crash pad as a GASKET for the top bolt on the front suspension on my Jeep. It was just a temporary fix when I did it, but was still working 6 MONTHS LATER!

#47: Make a slackline with old biners (for the pulley system) and webbing...I can't believe this hasn't been mentioned yet!
#48: Take that same webbing, but put one end way up high, clip a biner to it and you've got a zip-line! Use a harness to tether in or just use old slings as handles...maybe even ascenders or a big-bro as a handle too!

There's a lady up here in AK that uses tubular webbing as handles for hand-bags.
Retired biners are good for hauling cans of bear spray...
I make a hobby out of painting things that really don't need to be painted... so if I had retired hexes sitting around I'd paint flowers or climbers or something on them.
And of course I hang my hammock with retired gear.

They're called Russian Matrioshka (or Nesting) Dolls.
The larger hole on a Super 8 or Safety 8 could be used as a picture frame for your favorite climbing photographs!
Or do the same thing with large carabiners.

This recycles it back into climbing, but...
Old tubular webbing as rope protector for anchor lines (slide the rope inside a section of the webbing).

A small hex inside a big hex makes for a nice bell. Like a bear bell for your pack or dog in grizzly country.
With a little glue, a big hex could also become a nice candle holder.
I was thinking of trying to make a hammock out of an old rope and some webbing.
I've used old rope for belts, swiss seats, gear slings, car rack tie-downs and an occasional tow rope.

Wait... are you telling me that the fuzzy thing hanging off the back of my harness isn't supposed to have a beer in it already when I'm climbing?
Sorry, no new ideas for old gear unless you want to get real crafty and build a contraption for hanging your mailbox (instead of encasing it in brick like they do around here) or potted plants from the thatched roof of an outdoor patio.
There might be some lighting ideas involved with hexes, too... If you can run old xmas lights into them, who knows.

Here's a brilliant (yet somewhat demeaning) use for old hexes.
When your wife or girlfriend yells at you to set the table for those bastard friends of hers....... use the hexes as napkin rings. Everyone will appreciate the metal shavings, dirt, and encrusted chalk on their linens. They might just learn something about class.

Hey all,
At Disneyland's California Adventure there is a store that has climbing related stuff all over the walls as decoration. Anyway, they have a shelving unit made from Climbing rope and boards. It hangs from the ceiling and all the shelves are held together with ropes and biners. I check it out every time I am there. I had the same idea to make some kids bunk beds in the same way when the time comes. I had planned to make the beds look like portaledges. You could also do the unit in a cantilever fashion where the first shelf is tied to the wall with the rope at 45 degrees. Hell even a TV holder.
Pretty cool huh!

take a static rope and tie it between 2 tall trees, as close to the top as you can, clip a rope to the middle and tie yourself into that one and just jump of the horizontal rope...the trees flex, creating some good elasticity. just make sure your measurements are right or...well you get it.
