bump gets your topic to the top of the "recent messages" part of the home page of RC.com. you don't have to say bump though you could say "i like popsicles" and that would get your subject there too.

My girlfriend is a new rc.comer, and she asked about this the other day too. I've been posting on here for awhile and I wasn't for sure... But it is to 'bump' the post back on to the front page. Like, when something new is posted even if it's just 'bump' it gets the thread back onto the frontpage.

1)To strike or collide with. 2)To cause to knock against an obstacle. 3)To knock to a new position; shift: bumped the crate out of the way. 4)To shake up and down; jolt: bumped the child on her knee; was bumped about on a rough flight. 5)To displace from a position within a group or organization. 6)To deprive (a passenger) of a reserved seat because of overbooking. 7)To raise; boost: bump up the price of gasoline. 8)Sports. To pass (a volleyball) by redirecting it with the forearms. a la dictionary.com lol it's "bumps" a thread to the top of the pile while adding no relavent info so people can see the post on the frontpage. pardon the pissant noobmockingery. New threads appear at the top of the page. As people reply to other threads, the concerned thread gets moved down, until it's so low that no one bothers to look at it. So the OP posts a blank message to "bump" it back to the top of the page. Sometimes threads get lost in the fray of other highly active threads and the OP wants someone to answer. Usually considered bad form.
