Does anyone know the current situation with climbing permits? I heard somthing a while back about all teams going to climb in the Fits Roy/Cerro Torre area being required to bring a Argentinian guid with them (what crap). I plan on heading down there for a bid on Fits Roy next seasson and was just wondering if there was any validity to this, or if was just more made up crap to scare people off.

Seems suspect to me that you would need a guide from Peru to climb in Argentina.

There was something going on about charging for park permits (as you may now the Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre massifs are inside a national park) for climbers attempting to climb any of the spires. I think that has been put off, at least for now. Who knows what will happen next season, meaning the 2006/2007 season. In Argentina, political desisions like these are enforced or rejected in a split second.
Now, about requiring an Argentine guide to climb it? I've never heard of something like it and serioulsy doubt it could be enforced at current time, as they are still working to create national MG certification recognized by UIAGM. You DO need the park permit but those are provided free of charge at your arrival in El Chalten in the park service office. I wish you nice weather, you'll need it :wink:

yeah, I know about the current free permits, and heard the same thing you did about a possible upcoming charge. good to hear that didn't go into effect. :righton: thanks for the bidding on the weather.

I believe there was something mentioned in "The Climbing Life" that Alpinist sends out...
This year, they tried to add fees (for climbers only, I believe) for the area, and after enough opposition, they canceled that idea.
Now, they're apparently debating more restrictive conditions. Including closing the park between Dec and March, only allowing climbers to climb certain peaks and routes, and also require them to be accompanied by a local mountain guide.
