Fshizzle got me thinking.

Did I just say that? ANyway, he's right. It's a rack dammit! Not a Trad Rack. How can you make lewd double entendre jokes when you say "Hey Baby, nice Trad Rack." Lame!

So, is it a rack?
Or a Trad Rack?

Just wondering... if I participate in your poll, does it mean I'm lame?

hehe, there's so much more!!

Random climber dialogue:
"quit fiddlin' with yer nuts and climb!"
"sorry, I keep grabbin the wrong one. This ones too small, next one's to big..."
2nd climber cleaning the route:
"this friggin nut is stuck in the crack, I think I'm gonna have to leave it there."
Next party, upon finding the nut:
"Cool, free booty!"

or

"Don't ya hate it when your goin' for the next move and one of your nuts gets wedged in the crack?"

It sure is a good thing we climbers no what we're talking about, cause this stuff aint cheap, so how else can we soften the blow? Lame double-edged wise cracks are our only relief!

I mean, a good size rack will run you at LEAST 3 grand!

I'm lame.

Excellent point! It is a sign that you have transcended adolescent gear love, and have removed the unnecessary trappings.

Sport climbing is so zen!

fshizzle is wrong, but its entitled.

I can carry a rack of draws. Done it many times. Here's how...

take a gear sling and clip some draws to it. Now, the difficult part: put that gear sling over your head and one shoulder, (gates IN) and viola...

a rack of draws, whic is anything but trad.

Try it, one of the easiest magic tricks I know!

Oh man. What the heck do I call my gear on my sling over my shoulder when I left a hook on it and maybe a few quickdraws? A trad-aid-sport rack?

Of course I just wear the gear for show and just top rope everything so it's really a poser rack.

What if you are doing Crest Jewel? You only need draws, but it is anything but sport.

Ah, the mystery thickens.

So was our business name all wrong?! Crap, back to the drawing board, it's time to start over.

www.Rack.com was taken and so was www.NiceRack.com. We tried for www.BiggestRackEver.com but that was also taken. It sucks when your potential business name is porn related.

I'll get the rack, you get the rope.

what rack will we need for this route?
that rack wracked me in the face when I stopped.
we'll need two racks.
how's your rack.
nice rack.

rack, rack, rack, rack...

Well...one could have an AID RACK!!!

So the argument is over...
If you have a rack (however puny and pathetic it is) you MUST define what type of rack it is...to define the purpose of the rack...LOL

I didn't say that rendered it a sport rack. Only that it wasn't trad. Nothing to do with the route being climbed really.

there is no need to define something that is already defined by the nature of the route. My partner and myself know what we are talking about.

If im on Crest Jewel i have the rack for it, on inverted staircase I have the rack for it, on Super-Overbolt I have the rack for it, or the Shield I have the rack for it.

Case closed.

You have to go to Plan B: "Look at the jugs on that route (and the holds are big, too)."

In reply to:

It's just a rack. "Trad rack" is redundant because it implies there is such a thing as a "sport rack," which is a contradiction in terms. Free climbing rack is a legitimate phrase, though, as there is a distinction between it and an aid rack.

You can carry a rack of anything that you can rack. Rack, after all, is a real English word. But the generally accepted meaning of the climbing-specific term rack is a collection of trad or aid gear, not a rack of draws. Sport rack is thus a contradiction in terms, or at least sounds odd, because it appears to be a contradictory use of the climbing-specific rack, whereas "rack of draws" is a normal use of the generic English word rack.

OK, so where does the word 'rack' come from anyway?
I can guess, but any etymologists here to enlighten why a bunch of biners and slings and nuts are called a 'rack'?

its just a rack since there is no such thing as a "sport rack" biners, quickdraws, trad draws, slings, etc dont count as rack items. the rack is only protection and then of course the biners attached to them. the other stuff is just basics. like if I asked what to bring for a rack on a certain climb I would be refering to only the pro.
