To long is bad, but to short is worse.

don't worry clymbr_chk...I never let her bail bad ...just drove me nuts. In fact, I think she proabaly slipped more from her laughing at me cringing at the sound, rather than her not getting that grab. Damn, does that noise go straight to my spine. I will still make a spot though

I hate the sound too, I once fell off of a move because of the shivers from the sound of nails on the wall, gave me the willies!!! I keep my nails short when I can remember to cut them because if not they usually get gouged at the tips and that catches on anything and everything. the callouses on my hands are worse tho, whenever I touch a wool sweater my hands pull off about 300 little fibers, they also get a little tangled in girl's hair. but on the bright side... nothing like a back scratching from a climber... all they gotta do is rub your back and they nearly take the skin off!

Sorry never had a problem with my fingernails being to long I always clip them. My girlfriend says she has to cut hers off when she climbs cause they catch and bend backwards and she can't get a good grip.

Being a practitioner of the classical guitar, I am in a rather unique postition, because the traditional thinking in playing is that you must grow out you right hand nails in order to effect a "quality" tone. This, unfortunately, lies in direct conflict with my other passion - rock climbing. I have found through lots of trial and error that the best compromise is no compromise at all...it's simply best to have very short nails, and work around this "liability" on the guitar through diligent practice. In the past I tried to strike a middle ground, keeping my nails long enough to still strum the strings nicely, yet not too long that they get in the way during climbing. But the simple fact is that the rock is extremely harsh on nails, and the end result always turned out to be split/broken nails, which required care. The bottom line -SHORT NAILS are the ticket! And I really don't see how that could hinder one's climbing!
