I have been wondering this for a while, do you guys aid climbing because you like it, or is it out necessity?

Why do you climb? Answer that and the rest will reveal itself.

Aid climbing can be both enjoyable and rewarding, but I only employ aid techniques when free climbing is not an option.

Ahh.. yes grasshopper

But to answer your question, *Yes* to both.
I like the technical aspect of working out aid problems, love pure aid routes, but it's not the only type of climbing I do.
Sometimes.. especially when exploring new routes, you run into situations where aiding becomes the only way to connect line(s).

Depends on what your idea of "fun" is. It ain't for everybody. If you enjoy suffering and manual labor with a loaded gun pointed at your head, you'll probably dig aid climbing.

Well put, Ed!

As my buddy Maddog says, "Why do I keep hitting myself with a hammer? Cause it feels so good when I stop!"

Aid climbing is like backpacking long distances, up hills with a really heavy pack. It sucks while you do it, but when your finished, you can't wait to do ti again!

Some unimaginable positions can be attained on aid. If you're into "location climbing" and/or photography, aid climbing can set some pretty unbelievable stages.

Where's your photos? post up or shut up.

Cool responses.

On some pitches you'll swear there's no fun in it, and what was I thinking, and I hate El Cap, and this is stupid, and I love sport climbing, and if I live through this I'll sell my gear... But once you get to the belay (or the summit), all lack of fun washes away. That sounds fun, doesn't it?

lol, exactly.

aid is killer. i love freeclimbing a bit more but nothing does for freeclimbing what aid climbing does.

I only ask this because of all the recent big wall free climbing. (Tommy Caldwell)

LOL can't be bothered for you, tough guy. But I don't tilt the camera to make the climbing look steeper than it is. One doesn't need to if the route is sufficiently awesome-looking on its own. [And any compositional prowess exists.]

Y'all think these shots are tilted to make the angle look steeper?

Sorry for the thread drift. I did use aid to take the second shot, the first was not mine though. Pmyche seems to think these are tilted and that we lack compositional prowess.

Second opinion anyone?

Yeah...STFU and take it up in PMs. You called him out first, so don't whine about getting critiqued.

Point taken, but I really didn't find his photos comments a critique, rather an attack...

Anyways back to this enthralling thread...

Both, but I mainly aid climb because I hate myself.

If you need to ask whether or not aid climbing is fun, you obviously have not delved into this pure and masochistic sport. A true understanding of the ways of aid only come through many adventures, shared or solo. Fear, wafting through the air, combines with adrenaline to usher a new sense of reality to your body. You ask if aid climbing is fun, I ask, is a life other than as an aid climber fun?

To shamelessly paraphrase:

There are things that are fun to do and things that are fun to have done.

Sitting around the campfire drinking beer is fun to do.

Aiding up ElCap is fun to have done.
