We have just discovered a pretty big area with plenty of boulder rock. We went there last week-end to brush clean around and obviously start climbing. What would you do first (and afterwards) if you discovered such a place, and then what should be the next steps. Well now I have to mention it is in Thailand and although there are some climbers here we are not so many, so it won't become crowed. We were quite excited to discover boulders behind each others one after the other  , we were not expecting the place to be so big, it was really cool :P

That makes me wonder...I boulder at several areas where there are cacti all over the place and under the landings, and there are wasps everywhere too. I thought it was bad form to cleanaway that kind of stuff...is it or is it not?

I would keep it quiet. In fact, I have done exactly that. I would NOT 'develop' it, prepping the way for the masses. I wouldn't build trails. I wouldn't name hundreds of problems. I wouldn't create a guide book. I WOULD get together with my mates who already know of the place and encourage them to keep it quiet, to keep this small patch of Eden between ourselves for the time being. And then for years, maybe even a decade or two, I would periodically go there to take a bath in solitude and quietly repeat all the nameless problems me and my buds got to establish. But thats probably just me. DMT

IMHO, you have already said to much. Go enjoy it while you can and dont f@ck up the area for other who may come across it in the future.

Contract with the land owner for the exclusive climbing and guiding rights. Do a photo shoot for the climbing mags. Start a environmentally and culturally sensitive bouldering guide service. Dedicate 1% of your gross profits to the preservation of wild places.

Broadcast it everywhere and advertise like crazy. That way you'll be famous as the discoverers and your names will be on all the FA's for the area. Who knows, maybe you'll get rich.
