You all think that you have a greater purpose, yet you are blind to what is the true reality of your being. You climb ancient rock formations, which will change in time. These formations will change and shun your trace of passage. The fact that you climbed route #1 will not exist. Think about it -tda

As far as I know, no one is claiming that rock climbing has cosmic importance. And existensial angst is hardly specific to climbing. Troll, I suppose?

Oh, I dunno. I like to feel that the rock trembles at my passage and will for ever be changed by the mere presence of my shadow..... But I don't climb for history. I climb because I enjoy it in the here and now. If no one know that any of us existed a hundred years or five hundred from now, I don't think it would make any difference. Do I speak for just myself when I say I climb for the moment and for my own satisfaction in the day, or is this a common sentiment?

You can never step in the same river twice. You can always go home, so long as you understand that home is a place you've never been.

If I'm not mistaken, this is the same guy who was noting the inadequacy of Boulderites in our last episode. It should be noted that he appears to have Space Shot wired, lest you offend him.

First of all, don't tell me what I think. I use to be truly and deeply bothered by the word “purpose”, trying to justify a meaningless existence in this random world and life I occupy. People say that there is no way to really know anything, after years of pondering I think I’m now beginning to understand. In the future, the sun will die, expand, and the earth will evaporate into star dust. Even farther in the future the whole galaxy will be sucked into oblivion, down a black hole, possibly into a state of nothing, no matter, no time, nothing. So yeah, your right, my life is just as meaningless and infinitely insignificant as yours. You talk about the “reality of our being”, I want to know what that reality is. Our existence can be summed up as a collection of electrical and chemical impulses occurring in a physical space about the size of a grapefruit. We all live in the small and cut off world of our minds. The only thing that is real is the fact that some day, those impulses will stop. You, as well as I, will die. Considering our sport, could be sometime soon. If you think about it, climbing is just as arbitrary and meaningless of a thing as anything else in the universe. Im not saying climbing is meaningless, but that everything is. You say all climbers suck, but using your rational shouldn't everyone suck? This is all an example of annoying and useless bickering and is really quite pointless. Stroker, It sounds like you need to get out more, and it sounds like climbing isn't working for you.

I climb for the pure enjoyment of climbing... the relaxation, the focus, the excitement, the accomplishment, the camaraderie, the FUN.. what else can people add to this list? I don't care one bit if people in the future care whether I/we climb, we're doing it right now, and that's what matters.

Have you been reading the Dalai Llama's new book or are you just really high? As long as you include yourself into this realm of "suckiness", I'm fine with whatever you say.

this post made me wonder: what would anthropologists think if our culture died and they found the remains of our climbing exploits on the rocks, i.e. bolts, fixed pieces of gear/pitons? would they come up with some ritualistic worship ceremony of the rocks? probably not, but it is kind of fun to come up with off the wall explanations using evidence we leave behind.

You all think that you have a greater donut, yet you are blind to what is the true pastry of your being. You eat aging sugar confections, which will change your shape in time. These goodies will change and shun your trace of fitness. The fact that you climbed route #1 will not exist. Think about it -dmt
