I've got a question about what hangers will fit Rawl/Powers 1/2" bolts safely.
I have a pile of Fixe 3/8" hangers, and 3/8" Powers 6 piece bolts. For the application I'm using them for, however, I'd like to step up to Powers 1/2" bolts.
Now for anyone who knows how the Powers bolts work, the 1/2" bolts have a 3/8" bolt shaft, and the sleeve diameter is 1/2". My question is, is it safe to place the hanger on the shaft between the bolt head and the sleeve?
Does this affect the overall shear strength of the bolt? I can see no reason why it can affect the pullout strength, and my intuition says that that sleeve does not add much structurally to the strength of the bolt in shear pull configuration.
Still, it would be nice if anyone has any experience with setting bolts like this, or has seen any ultimate load test results in this nonstandard configuration.

No worries, 3/8" hole hangers are fine. Stainless steel 1/2" 5-pieces have a very thin section of the sleeve that you just remove (used to be a separate piece of the blue sleeve, now it is metal), if you wanted to be super precise on the non-stainless, you could shorten the upper sleeve (or blue sleeve) by a fraction. Fixe hangers are slightly thicker than Petzl or most other hangers.
However, if you use 1/2" 5-pieces with very thick hangers - like the Metolius rap hangers - you do need to shorten the sleeve. For the longer 5-piece, I just hacksaw the upper sleeve about 1/3" or so. I've never used the Metolius rap hangers with short 1/2" 5-pieces, it would probably not be safe to shorten the main expansion sleeve.

Boltdude is exactly right! Don't alter the main expansion sleeve, 'taint safe. The rest is cool though. I use them frequently to mount storefront metal into concrete. They will hold till the cows come home...

Don't hacksaw galvanized bolts. While it shouldn't matter with stainless, cutting through the zinc coating will cause the sleeve to start rusting the day it is put in.
For most hangers, ditching the washer will give you enough room. On 1/2" bolts the washer is unnessesary.
