I know this has to be an overdiscussed topic, but I still would like to see the results. It seems that climbers are often stereotyped as pot-smokers. How many of you actually do (or for you old guys, did) smoke pot?

I'll admit it, I inhaled........ I did my 3 years of being drunk, stoned, and generally a degenerate, but I just grew out of it. I've had one joint in the past 12 years.....just a lifestyle change I guess. Duck

Who said the old guys "did"? I know some that do. I saw a lot of it in Camp 4 last year too. I haven't done it in about 4 years and no one would believe me if I told you how many times I have tried the funky herb. I'll tell you anyway. Only seven times. I can still count how many times I have done it. Quite frankly, I've had a hankerin' for a little lately, but it will pass then the opportunity will present itself and I won't want any. Always the same scenario. Amongst the amout of stereotypes climbers have, that one isn't the worst. I think my favorite stereotype is the one about the fact that we must have a "death wish". That's my favorite. Yup! That is what we are. Pot smoking, trash digging, can recycling, car camping, no job having, death wish wanting, morons! When I saw that, I just HAD to get that on my resume!!! Steve

Climbing is the best way to get high! I never did smoke pot, never needed to, but a lot of my climbing partners sure did. In the early 70's I found a used up nitrous oxide bottle 2 pitches up on a belay ledge. I always wondered who would be crazy enough to get high when they still had a few pitches to go or a couple of rappels to get down?!!

A day ago I was sitting around the fire at Camp 4 and... umm... well, it seems to be pretty common practice there. Funny, though, I sometimes wondered how so many people who had absolutely no money still always had a stash of pot...

I get paranoid and and high just by climbing. I don't really see the need to up the ante by smoking pot. I've seen, firsthand, though, the shamanistic transformation that can allow a climber to go up an otherwise impossible pitch. Like some sort of American Indian legend, the user of the drug actually becomes a different lifeform (Gecko?) in his mind and performs accordingly. Golfers sometimes take beta-blocker drugs to similarly improve their ability to focus intensely. And so do some concert musicians (not Heavy Metal guitarists: violinists and cellists....) Since there is so much attention paid to Clean Ascents, I think there must be some merit to doing them that way For what it's worth, there is no climb on El Capitan called The Chronic, or the Crippler. Or Sin Semilla. Or Acapulco Gold. Or Dirt Weed. Or Bonger's Boredom. But even the most conservative guidebook documents Magic Mushroom, Mescalito, and the Tangerine Trip as fine outings, suitable for the whole family. Guffigure. Climbers aren't the only group of no-good, pot-smokin' trash out there... You could probably dig up a drug stereotype for just about every single subculture there is. (shrug) Having said that, all the climbers I know smoke at least a little. I don't, mostly because I'm allergic to it. Went through the phase of trying most of the other "safe" substances... Fun enough, but not needed for more than the aforementioned 3 years. Nothing wrong with it, just not for me these days. -Chris

(in a Clinton-esque voice) I did NOT inHALE! And I did NOT have SEX with THAT WOMAN! Well, OK, Yes I DID!!! Yes, I to will admit it. I have smoked PLENTY of the "evil weed" in a younger incarnation... I won't go into the gorry details thank you. I don't (regularly anyway) anymore, mainly because I had kids and got married, and then divorced. In that order! Anyway, I thought I'd be a more up-standing "dad" if I wasn't a "stoner" anymore. This was LONG before I ever considered climbing though... Live Free! Play Hard! Climb On! duskerhu

Whilst some of you pack beer or spirit for relaxing after a long day. I belive in packing light. Hmmm 6pack of warm beer or 1 gram??? No cans to pack out, and you can use your TP in a pinch. Any drug including caffine is taboo on the rock for me. I just try to picture Peter Croft soloing with shakey hands. Save it for the camp. PS Call me a hypocrite but working out in the garage on the woodie is another thing all together. pack light pack papers
