The Bebie Leadership Award

Presented to AmericaÕs outstanding activist(s) for the cause of conserving climbing access and the climbing environment.

Curt Shannon

Curt is a founding member and dedicated spokesperson for the Friends of Queen Creek and is always available while balancing family life and a demanding day job. He has donated hundreds of hours of volunteer time including two trips to Washington, DC lobbying Congress on the Southeastern Arizona Land Exchange Act of 2005, organizing local activists in letter writing campaigns and political strategy, meeting with Resolution Copper Company as a local representative in negotiations for Oak Flat and Queen Creek access and much more than we can encapsulate here.

I know it's not what you were going for, but good for you anyway.

Winning the AF Bebie award is both an honor and somewhat embarrassing. Any progress that has been made toward maintaining climbing access at Oak Flat / Queen Creek has resulted from the efforts of many individuals. I think that I have merely been the most visible guy. Anyway, thanks to all of you for your kind words.

Curt

pfffft. Any whisky afficionado worth his salt knows the 25 year Macallan is superior to the 30 year.

Good going Curt! It's people like you who will keep climbing areas open, and, keep climbing from becoming illegal and obsolete.

Respectfully,
From another old geezer like you are.

Not sure what Ed Leeper would think of it, when put this way... ;-)

You have dumped a lot of effort into this, Curt, and it seems to have ended up somewhat positively. Maybe not exactly the way we would have liked, but I suspect things would have gone much more sour if you and others of like mind hadn't stepped in and took a stand.

Cheers.
