Please enlighten me all you wise ones, I climb with a 9.8 70 meter rope that I love, but I'm using a 10.5 old rope to practice my aiding on, that 10.5 has fianlly had it. Im buying a new rope tommorow and I want to know what size rope I should get is another 9.8 to small the sterength ratio is just as good as the majority of thicker ropes. I'm not going to be doing 30 pitch El cap routes with it just mild aiding and for use as a back up rope on long trad climbs? Any info always appreciated.

Thanks Geoff

I have seen ropes get pretty abraded and fuzzed very quickly when doing lots of aiding and jugging/cleaning.

A bigger rope will handle it better than a smaller one - duh.

So the answer to your question lies only in the amount of hard use you will be giving it, and how much you worry about jugging ropes that are abrading on edges and ledges.

Scary!

Not much help I know. Just try and accurately predict what your real useage will be.

Cheers

Fishy.

Many times I have kicked myself after getting responses here...

"Why didn't I think of that - Duh!"

That is the plus side of these groups!

I know some well respected aid climbers who routinely climb ElCap with 9.8 or 10's. That said, you won't see me jugging over edges on ropes that small. I guess it depends on what you're comfortable with...and as fishypete said...how often you feel like buying a new cord.
