Mazda6. Getting to the crag is half the fun, not to mention getting 30mpg while pulling .85g!

I absolutley love my jeep. I have a 2000 sahara. Get the in-line 6 and the engine will last. And you can take out the back seat with the removal of a single cotter pin revealing a surprisingly large amound of cargo space. Off road performance...ya...it's a jeep. It's not terrific on gas but it isn't terrible. You can get a decent one for under 9k.

I drive a Subaru WRX and I just love the drive to the crags as much as I love the climbs. I have the sedan, though the wagan would be a better choice.

But I would say any Subaru will do great.

scooby wrx wagon... (IF the back seats folded down in the sedan I would have gone with that probably, but they don't for some ODDD reason!)

goes like hell, fun to drive, all wheel drive, and roomie...

only complaint, 93 octane... but its a turbo that goes from 0 to 60 in 5.5 secs, guess I can't complain tooooo much!

'01 VW Golf TDI - turbodiesel, baby! No good off-road but good dirt/gravel's OK and she gets ca. 50 mpg on DIESEL which is running twenty cents cheaper than 87 octane unleaded, here in OK

roomy boot, seats 4, stylee too!

(the '70 microbus threw a rod on the way back from Baldy last spring but we'll resurrect her once we've done some minor but long-awaited bodywork - they're still making NEW air-cooled VW engines in Mexico)

enjoy the Jeep - may it serve you well!

If you need the room and are willing to sacrifice milepergallon ratio...........Short Bus. You could fit 12 "special" people inside and tons of gear. If you took out seas you would not need cdl license. Think about it.......

But when your driving the short bus, i REALLY doubt that you will have to worry about getting any speeding tickets, so $20 says that you could get away with leaving the seats (if you wanted to) and driving it w/o the lisence.

VW Jetta Wagen. 2.0L.

Rocks on the offroad, though the clearance is lacking. Haven't hit a road I couldn't do in it.

Enough room to move everything I own cross country. Plus, good mileage ... and its stylish (except in the SE, where the hicks have never seen a wagen).

For the truely hardcore, a bike is the way to go. I ride my Trek 1000 road bike to three local crags pretty regularly. It's eco-friendly, gets me in shape for alpine snow slogs and is much cheaper to drive than a car.
Plus it's fun and adds some adventure to the day.

My X is fabulous. V6 4X4. That bitch would tear up dirt, mud, sand, and snow. Plenty of room in the back for gear and room for 5 people. The factory audio system is pretty good. The factory carpet protectors definitely keep the car from getting completely trashed. I had a habit of spontaneous trips to Great Falls (since I live in Great Falls) so I'd store all of my climbing gear in plastic bins (container store bins) in the back and I still had room for god knows what else I'd conjure up to fit in the back. I'm thinking about being a tool and putting a 3" lift and some 31s on that bad girl. My ultimate dream vehicle would be a tricked out Jeep Comanche with a camper. Ohhh the possibilities! For those of you that are looking for more information regarding Xterras than you know what to do with, go to this website: http://www.xterraownersclub.com/forums.html.

A few of my picks would be:

1. Nissan Xterra-Very dependable, especially at higher milage. Good gas economy. Nice when you need it to be, but relatively aggressive when you want it to be.

2. Chevy Trailblazer-Some might want to harm me for suggesting a domestic vehicle, but my pop drove one for over a year, and now my brother. They come pretty cheap used, the base model has 270 hp which is more than enough to get you where you need to go

3. Jeep Cherokee-One of the big downsides to these vehicles is that they have a very low resale value so if you ever look to trade it in or put it up for sale dont expect too much from it.

4. Dodge Ram 1500-It's got everything you'd need. They're pretty smooth for highway travel and with the stock wheels and tires road noise isnt that much of an issue.

5. Nissan Pathfinder- Dont go and spend several thousand dollars buying a brand new one. Get one from 98 to 02. My ex girlfriend drives a 97, its a manual, and she's never had problems. In fact she's been driving it for the past four years and hasnt had to take it into the shop once.

That's an upside if you buy used.

although, the low resale value of this vehicle is linked to its reliability problems.

There's a reason Cherokees have poor resale: unreliable, and poor gas mileage from a vehicle that isn't particularly powerful. Ride isn't the best either. Get an X-terra before you get one of these.

1993 Subaru Legacy sedan! Hell Ya! I put coilovers on to get the ground clearance. 7" at the lowest point, 9.5" under the side rails. She's got 185,000 miles on her and still drives strong, despite my daily abuse. Fold down the back seats and cram in the crash pads, or put on the rocket box and pack up the trad gear. Oh ya and you can't beat AWD.

I would have to agree Subarus will go forever, I just retired mine after170,000 miles and replaced it with a new forester that should last for the next ten years of climbing.

Mini cooper S, on road handling is awesome, tons of power, plenty of room for 2 on a long trip, or 3-4 on a shorter trip, and If you know how to drive off road (ie don't put your tires in the ruts and keep up your momentum when the surface is loose) then it does a good job on that too. I've only gotten my car stuck 2 times, both were driver error.
