My climbing buddy and I were going up to do a quick lap on the 3rd flatiron, wearing our gear (we had no packs) up the trail. A couple of girls out for a hike asked us if we were locksmiths. I once almost got in a fight with an REI employ who kept insisting that I buy my climbing shoes 2 sizes to small If I was to have any hope of actually rock climbing. One year at the Ouray Ice fest, I walked up to check things out and stretch my legs after the 10 hr drive. I was 16 at the time, and wearing shorts, a cotton sweatshirt, and running shoes. People asked me If I was lost, or cold (I really was comfortable). I went up to a demo both to check out the new leashless tools that had just been invented, only to have the gear rep explain to me what ice climbing was. Some of my friends ask me to take them climbing on occasion. On one such occasion my first timer friend asked me, so what exactly is there to prevent me from dying?

When we were walking down the cables on Half Dome laden with haul bag, ropes, and gear, two tourists coming up got wide eyed and one asked in awe "Wow, did you sleep on top last night?"

How about two boulderers at a gym arguing (literally arguing) over whether the move in question required a "BAH!" or "ZUH!" yelled while making the move. (shudder)

Some karate dude (complete farse) wanted us to hang a banner on our gyms climbing wall the day of their "black belt exams" (total bs). Basically they wanted my friend to climb up a 10 ft 40° overhang, traverse 5 ft to the left, then climb up another 8ft to screw in their banner. Since weīd moved the mats, the scarce holds on the wall were some of smallest ones we have, and he didnīt have shoes on, he was a bit hesitant, to which 1 guy responds: "It should be easy for him, right? I mean, he climbs mountains and all...". Sure dude... itīs only 18 ft down if he canīt hold onto a sharp lateral crimp just below waist level while reaching up to put in the screws and fix your piece of shite cloth to the wall.

My most recent favorite comment was from two people toproping next to me in the gym. After being unable to pull a move on a route while leading in the gym, I came down so that I could top rope the route and work through the move. The couple turned to me as I was untying and the girl asked innocently, "Is leading really harder than toproping?" I wouldn't blame her for the comment, but she had been climbing, even I knew from the first time I climbed that leading wouldn't be easy. In fact, I thought those people were crazy bastards with a death wish (of course I did see only trad climbers and had no idea sport or gym climbing existed).

One that I know we all get is "Why?" Maybe not HA HA funny, but hmmm funny. Funny that I can't answer it. Funny that all of the money and time and thought and money that goes into it all I can come up with is "Because".

Not really climbing, but I was slacklining the other day and some 40 yr old comes up tome and in a pissed off voice starts bitching about how I was hurting the tree. Me: "Thatīs what those pads are there for." Him: "Oh. But still, the pressure will choke the tree." Me: (wtf face) "Uhh... No, I donīt think it will." Him: (hissy bitch voice) "Fine. Why are you doing that anyway?" Me: (off the top of my head) "Training for the circus, thereīs good money in the circus business." Him: "Oh, ok." Me: "Yeah." stupid...

i was working las night at the gym when someone noticed a smell. was a weird one. lightly perfumed and familiar. it took me about 15 minutes to recognise it as talcum(?) powder. there was a school group there and the teacher thought it would give them a little more friction. it was kind of awkward asking them not to use it anymore!!
