Great fun as long as you don't get caught.... and not at night then they think you are trying to break in.

I've been buildering for years..... The most fun I ever had was squirreling up the performing arts building at the University of North Texas, which, as people from there know, it's right next to the police station. Buildering is a blast, and the fun is as much getting away with it as it is the actual climbing.

me thoughts -
started my climbing on buildings and billboards in downtown buffalo circa 1988
sweet intricate carved stones - grape vines at 5.7 all the way to the top, huge ledges every story...last call was at 4 am, so we climbed in the dark all the time
never been as high without a rope since then, come to think of it...

dangerous. should be illegal. don't try this at home kids. now if you will excuse me, there is a sweet furniture store here that will go at v2, its drunk and i'm dark...

I read this and remember my exploit to top out the four tallest buildings in the downtown here in Bozeman after a last call. I ended up backing down from the Federal building though....

:D Ahhh...reminds of when I first started climbing and wanted to climb everything I saw. I seem to have lost some of that passion along the way. :( For me it was on the UC Berkeley campus, there was some really good stuff and a fair amount had chalk on it. The element of getting busted always added to the high. Maybe I should try it again.

I heard of a guy who climbed the stone tower here in downtown Pardubice. I knew he was drunk before I was told. It looks like great climbing but how do you get down? He solved that one himself. fell from 9 meters to the cobble stone. His friends were still lucid enough to spot and prevent injury. He wasn't a climber. His spotters were. I guess it could have been worse. Could have been the other way around.

On the other hand, Sounds like fun. I have no desire to get caught though.

Well, I watch a lot of Alias, so I imagine that buildering could turn out to be a useful skill in a pinch if you need a vertical escape route from the forces of evil. Or something.

my thoughts: trespassing, no pro, rescue and first aid nearby, coroner nearby, hose bib nearby (to squirt off sidewalks), ego-centric, retreat-down climb? renegade/anarchist climbers.
all negatives, huh? well let's see: it's nearby, "cool", free (well, shoes), renegade/anarchist climbers, all your friends can watch, ego-boosting.
guess i'm down on it. sorry. life is to sweet to waste it away on momentary trills. live long and prosper. 8^)

Buildering probably goes through the mind of most EVERY climber. Who doesn't walk past EVERY vertical surface and wonder whether it will go and how hard it would probably be?

I know I sure do.

Sorry to dredge up a dead thread, but this story was too funny! Buildering is fun, but it's bound to get harder for me to do down here because of this news story from last week (no, he's not a climber to the best of my knowledge, just a clever crook).

Police say burglar scaled walls to break into apartments

Making the most of unlocked sliding doors and balconies, police say a Gainesville man scaled the walls of a local apartment complex and broke into at least three second-story apartments while residents were sleeping inside.

Late Wednesday, Gainesville Police arrested Joshua Ross, 19, for burglary of an occupied dwelling, grand theft, and burglary of a vehicle after three break-ins, all at Lexington Crossing, 3900 SW 27th St., in late November.

Police believe Ross used molding on the side of the building to get a foothold and climb up onto the apartment balconies. Going from apartment to apartment, he would check for unlocked sliding doors.

University of Florida junior Keith Barry, 20, said he woke up to find an intruder in his home on Nov. 30.

“I just woke up on a whim and looked over and saw this guy in the room,” Barry said. The man swore at Barry, who asked what he was doing, and ran out of the apartment. The burglar stole four video games. “I think my roommates are a little shaken up that it happened,” the student said.

The night before, another apartment at the complex was targeted. A 19-year-old UF sophomore, who didn't want to be named, said a burglar went into her roommate's bedroom on Nov. 29.

“She's a light sleeper. She woke up immediately. He started shining a flashlight in her face,” she said. The man claimed another roommate had let him in but ran away when she grabbed a baseball bat next to her bed and told him to get out.

“I haven't been sleeping in my apartment lately,” the college student said since the burglary.

Detective Sgt. Scott Wilkey said officers received information Wednesday Ross might be linked to the burglaries. When police went to his home, they found Ross and the stolen items including video games, game systems and an iPod.

Ross, police said, admitted to breaking inside apartments and trying the doors of others that he couldn't get into because they were locked.

“Even if you live on a second floor, lock all your doors,” Wilkey said.
Police also accused Ross of using remote door openers on the residents' key chains to get into two vehicles.

And, Wilkey said, Ross told officers he cut a hole into fences between the apartment complex and the neighborhood where he was staying, which he used to travel between the two areas. The damage to the fences has since been repaired by the apartment complex, he said.

IMHO buildering is a good quick excercise to break up the tedium of a boring day. It's awesome to have a project you can jump on on the way home from work. I still would call it climbing even though I never really set out for a daring session of midnight buildering.

And Arjun, I did check out you pics. I had been wondering who put all the chalk marks on the side of UC. Check out the south end of the east side of Gerstein, some tricky traversing to be had there.

Cheers

I´m going to start a guide book of buildering ascents at my campus.

I just got the idea of writing down some escape routes as well...
