Singles Thread Restored

Can't Post

Hi everyone,

We have discussed what you have had to say in regards to the singles thread, and we decided to restore the thread. The one caveat is that all images in the previously deleted (now restored) posts be converted to links. It is not possible for moderators to edit the posts, so we will allow the users a week to make the necessary changes.

We realize and admit in retrospect that we acted too quickly, and chose to err too much on the side of caution. The action taken was not supported by a majority of the moderators, and while not all decisions are taken democratically, in this case it was a mistake. Simply put, we stuffed up and would like to put things right.

We know the reversal of the previous decision might cause a new set of complaints with a different group, however we trust that the conversion of images to links in the posts will address most of the concerns.

Going forward, we will be more lenient in cases such as these, if the images are linked and not displayed within the posts. We realize that our Terms of Service are not black and white for every issue, and where gray areas exist and if we feel that lines are being crossed, we will give users an opportunity first to edit or remove their posts before taking more drastic measures.

The healthy debate and many good suggestions that came from you in response to our initial actions contributed to our re-consideration of the decision. We appreciate your input, and above all we value the positive evolution that occurred on Rockclimbing.com as a result.

Daniel

Hey phil, I appreciate the fact that you guys went back and did what everyone originally suggested you guys do, but I fear it is all a bit too late.

I just saw the "other" singles thread started by cracklover and I find it sort of amusing how much people are protesting this still, when everyone really knows that this thread is pretty much done. But there is really something to be learned here and I hope the mods and management won't simply dismiss this point.

So the thread is done, no matter what happens now, its 15 minutes of fame are over. The discussion has lost its vibe and humor and it has gone off track. Like someone said, it went down like the sex pistols. I hope I am painting a clear picture of the impact censorship (as minimal as it was), has on a community and I really hope that this will never happen again.

I really do appreciate the fact that you guys went back over your decision, but I hope it's clear that even if you undo everything you did, you can't restore the pulse of the thread and, in some cases I've seen, an entire community. I've been a mod on many sites, helped start some and seen to many fall apart to sh*t because of bad moderation. Sometimes my own (it's learning experience, right).

This is a bit dramatic don't you think? I mean it would have been like a week or two before there was another thread exactly like this one with a different name that people could post naked pictures of themselves in.

You're missing the point. You could die peacefully at 83 years old, or you could be shot tomorrow. It's about the disruption it causes in the flow. As I said that was minimal, but it completely ruined the thread. I doubt it will happen here, but I've seen this happen to the extent that entire communities fell apart over it. And it sucks. I'm only saying this because I enjoy being here, I enjoy reading what pretty much everyone writes and I wouldn't want to see this community falling apart.

The Community will remain the same, with or without X or Y. I've seen more changes here than you and less than others, and I'm still here despite some major disagreements and despite the facts that people I loved are not here anymore. I even cried once or twice. Sometimes the Community is funny, sometimes a bit annoying, whoever frequent it.

Anyway, I'm sure we all appreciate your wise words and your experience. I even wonder whether the Community would be the same without your uniqueness.

I agree with the above, I haven' t been here that long and have been in and out but things change.

It won't fall apart because it always has new blood coming in and restoring a balance that may have been lost. Boondock_Saint is just a part of that new blood stirring things up and getting it moving again.

That was my point. Boondock, this isnt the first thread like this. This is like the fourth or fifth in a few years. The community is going nowhere and there will always be a thread like this for you!!

Don't despair.

You guys need to go and re-read what I've written. I already said I doubt it would happen here but that the impact of censorship (AS MINIMAL AS IT WAS) did affect the community. I'm just stating my observation here -> There was another 7 page thread started over this issue (and I did not participate in that thread) so it DOES mean something to people around here. If people didn't care they wouldn't make such a fuss. I wasn't making any predictions so stop trying to tell how wrong I was in doing so.

Yeah, I agree that people did care about it. But it honestly doesn't take a lot to get people fired up about things. Especially on the internet.
