Every group has one. If you think that your group doesn’t you should probably look closer…in the mirror, cause it just might be you!
The label whore is an undeniable beast in the climbing community. But what constitutes label whore status. What is the difference between whoring and just getting the best gear you can get?
Sunday I came to the wall with my new PrAna beanie. Squid (my good friend and rival whore) is wearing a petzl “undershirt“.
What do I have to do to catch up and put the ho back in...well...I give up?

Dam! I wish the label/gear whores around here would get sick of their shit and donate it to the goodwill so I could be a label whore too.

I will freely admit being a label whore, but I am not talking about labels on clothing. If I spent that kind of money on my duds, I wouldn't have any left for my CAMP Ballnuts and TriCams and my Black Diamond Cams/Nuts/Hotwires/Neutrinos/Runners/etc/etc/etc :P
I couldn't tell you what brand of clothing I climb in, but I can tell you the condition......and it isn't good. I think I have one pair of pants/shorts that don't have any holes.....yet

OK, I'll come clean. I'm a collage student. I can't afford anything. The benie was on sale for $14 at REI. I got it as a joke for squid. I can't put down 30 on north face T, or 60 on Arbor Wear pants. Most of my climbing clothes are true to one label. Faded Glory! That is right. Wal-Mart special. Maybe not as sexy as Patagonia, but covers me up and that's whats important...for everyone involved.
Although I must say I did get some killer approach shoes. Vasque, they were half off...so I put them on lay-a-way. :?
As for gear: Eureka, BD, Franklin, North Face...not trusting my life to that stuff you see in the pagan gear adds. :shock:

me and my partner come from the same page....we don't flinch when spending 600 on a jacket......he, being a rockies boy, just got a new downie....me being a coasties boy, planning on a new 700+ arcteryx gore-tex jacket.......buy nice or buy twice...everything is thought out to be a long term deal...everything is well thought out...and its not that i'm rich....i work a brutal, hazardous job with shit pay, nothing about being a "whore".....i'm 100% devoted to climbing....i could care less about buying a nice pair of jeans....my closet consists of cheap cosco jeans, t-shirts, and all my techie outdoor shit...thats it...i don't wear my arcterx gamma mx hoody with a 650 buck plus tax jacket cus it looks cool, its because its all i have...i can't justify spending cash towards city urban wear when climbing is a much more active thought...

I would call that gear. It is totally acceptable to buy the best gear. I'm talking T's and other uselessness. i.e. did you know that Patagonia makes boxers?

At that price, I'm thinking you should flinch (I would). I have a $120 gore-tex north face shell that keeps the wind/snow/rain off me and vents my sweat out just as well as a $700 shell.

hummm, see, TNF is an evil company that makes shitty products, and arc'teryx is a local company to me, and i support that, their products are of higher quality and innovation...price doesn't mater to me...i don't flinch cus i know what i;m getting, and everything is researched...i've compared em to every other company and i still prefer their cut and their designs, so i have to spend 200 to 400 more...big deal...money comes, and money goes

If Arc'tertx is local then those have to be Canadian $'s. That makes a big difference.

Yeah I agree about Arc'teryx being the best company. I have their bora 80 pack, bibs, jacket, harness, almost all of my gear is Arc'teryx. As far as I know the Alpha SV goretex jacket is their most expensive modle and it retails for 500 dollars at the very most. that is what I was confused about. you can find the gamma mx hood for around 300 dollars. WTF
