Just had a question that has been bothering me lately. My family doesn't get it so I thought that I might ask some like minded souls for some opinions. For the first time in 10 years I will be spending Christmas without my other. The season doesn't really mean that much this year. I don't know if I can take being all the places WE should have been, so I'm thinking road trip. Not a big deal just an hour or two to the middle of nothing for an overnighter. Just me, and the pooch. Thought I might boulder a little Sunday, It's supposed to be 60 and sunny in the Mulberry valley. Is this as tortured and depressing as my family seems to think it is, or is it a viable distraction from my pain?

Do you think this trip is the equivalent of a drunken pity party? Not sure that I'm cool with that. This is supposed to be a positive release. How do I get people to see that?

i wasn't implying that you were going to do that because that doesn't seem to fit your personality... i was saying that it is something I would do... and even that was meant to be sarcastic... lcc

I'm not going to go out and get smashed by myself in the woods, but don't be surprised if there is a visit from good ole Pabst.

In reply to: Do you think this trip is the equivalent of a drunken pity party? ... No man, not at all, sorry if you took offense. If you want to take a some time off to climb, to be at peace with yourself doing what you love (perhaps sharing it with your dog), thatīs totally understandable.

No offense taken. I think you are looking too deeply into this. I just don't want to be around anything Christmas this year. I don't want to be around all the happy people with their happy families. Most importantly I don't want to be the elephant in the corner that every one feels sorry for.

I say do it. It's not for (family) them to understand. It's personal... and why please others when you can't yourself. Pretending to be "joyful" when you are not... is not being true to your self. I say go. boulder walk breathe I had a thanksgiving a few years back, same thing. split up with ex..., and had no desire to go to see family for a "fake" display. so. went to my bestest friends house built a fire grabbed all gardening magazines/home/climbing made cookie dough chips and dip and watched movies and got stoned all day. :D Probably one of the best holidays I've had and since, I've had quite a few good holiday's since. It was my(key word) break I'd do it again. enjoy/think boulder...be with your pup. ~T

I say fair enough. This is what I would do: Take this weekend and pack it. Load that shit in the car and go. But don't only go for a couple hours. Make it worthwile. Go wherever it is you kinda feel like going to. Then when the trip is over give back to the community, sometimes just picking up trash is enough to make you feel better about yourself. Fill up the weekend enough so you stagger into work on Monday exausted, but fullfilled. :D Jon P.S....Go chase some women for me....

Don't blow off your family on Christmas man. Even if you hurt, think about giving a little back to them.

In reply to: Most importantly I don't want to be the elephant in the corner that every one feels sorry for. Then don't be. Do some bouldering or whatever. But its just a day, man, its just a day. You can make it into what you want. Your family would probably want you around, so how about humouring them--this is the season of generosity, not the season of me. And don't give them a chance to feel sorry for you--if someone mentions it, tell them the truth, "its tough but I'm fine and happy to be with you guys", and move on. UB

...or should I "just do it!" It seems like we have a split decision over all. I went to Thanksgiving, for about an hour. What you need to know is that my family is huge. There will be about 45 people at my grandmother's Sunday. It is in the same town that Tarah and I grew up together in. I'm not sure that I'm ready to go back for the afternoon only to come home alone while the rest of the families split off to their spouses families. Just thought it might be easier to start the day alone with nothing around to remind me that it is Christmas. As for giving back. I'm a councilor. I've been giving for 6 years now. I'm a little pumped right now. Thing I need some me time to shake it out.

Go do it. Find yourself a bouldering spot, grab a forty, tip out a little for ole saint Nick, get some flappers and some gobies. Find what you love that loves you back. Take care, man.
