Hey, I'm in the market for a new synthetic belay parka. I've got my eye on the Patagonia DASS Parka, but it's a bit pricey. Anyway, I'm open to recomendations! Thanks

I use an EMS belay parka; it's frikken huge, but fits over everything without being binding at all. Might be a viable alternative. T

I was never able to find a DAS at a price that didn't involve selling my children into slavery. Lots of people love them, check out this thread on NEICE.com I finally found a Mountain Hardwear belay parka on a great sale at the end of last season. I've been happy with it so far. It has a good fit, good pockets, and a hood that fits well over a helmet. The weight is about the same as a DAS.

You might peek at the Mtn Hardwear Voodoo Belay parka. It retails for $195. I'm hoping for an after-christmas sale... Cheers, A.W.

REI Generator down jacket.....69 bucks if its still on sale, otherwise its only 99 retail. I personally wouldnt need synthetic for belaying as I dont belay in the rain.

In reply to: what do you guys look for in a belay parka? features, cut, etc... Warmth. Synthetic insulation (I hate to even say that one for risk of starting a religious discussion on down vs synthetic :-). Very generous cut, so it will easily fit on top of everything else, including harness, gear sling, etc. Hood that will fit over a helmet and still let your head turn easily. Pockets. I like to store snacks and spare glove liners in the pockets, that way when I'm at a belay the stuff is right there quick and easy. I'm not so worried about waterproofness. If it's cold enough for me to wear this parka then there's not much liquid water around.

I got a Patagonia Micro Puff jacket for this and love it...synthetic, packs down small, not the warmest out there, but it should do the trick. The DAS parka is sweet though, as are the Wild Things jackets. The Patagonia outlet stores usually have good deals, expecially their presidents day sale. Good luck, Jim

I got a DAS parka on EBay for half price. Works good. If I was buying new, though, I'd certainly look hard at the Integral Designs jacket. I'm a primaloft convert.

Have a Wild Thinks EP but, a bit light for a winter belay ice climbing jacket. Watch Patagucci for the 40% off sales in their outlets. 40% off something already discounted 40% make 'er pretty cheap. Think I have a Puffball DAS-esque parka which seems warm enough for winter belaying that I picked up real cheap. I have a feathered friends down parka that I like when its really too cold to be climbing...(!) -Brian in SLC

GoLite Six Month Night. Too bad they don't make them anymore. Big hood, lots of interior mesh pockets, two way zipper. For $50, I'll sell you the size L that I have, forest green. I bought a size M to replace it.

Do Montbell and Moonstone have decent reputations? I've also been looking at Montbell's U.L. Thermawrap Parka, and Moonstone's Uber Down Belay Parka. It seems like no one really carries Moonstone anymore, and I haven't heard much about Montbell.

They're both great companies. try http://www.acadiamountainguides.com and go to their "gear deals" (on the upper right)...they have few Moonstone and GoLite jackets on sale now, somthing like 30% off in-stock stuff. Give em a call, they have some stuff in that's not listed on the site too. Cheers, Jim

Moonstone makes some great products... I have an Uber down jacket.... yes, its down (700+ fill) but the shell is heavy duty ripstop and canvas w/ DWR (durable water repellent). Its roomy, has 2 big interior pockets and has waterproof welded zips. It works great for standing around and letting out cord at the bottom of a big icicle.

I use a down coat made by Browning, the hood is even lined with coyote fur and its been great for those cold winter belays. It was made for duck hunting thereforw it is rather large made for standing around in the cold waiting for ducks to fly by or belay your flailing pal on his project. It unzips from the bottom too so the belay device and rope have ample room to shift up during a fall or hang dogging. Its been great and worth stuffing in the bag for the longer approaches.

Talons05, No. I got it for $195, but that still beats the DASS! Happy holidays everyone!

I have a Moonstone Cirrus and it serves me well, I didn't get cold belaying in 19 degree weather, although it wasn't really windy out. It's cut big to fit over a shell, I think. I find the lack of a hood a good thing.
