i am going to joshua tree tomorrow morning, yes i am!
i'm gonna try out my brand new yellow and green aliens, yes i am!
i love that place so much, and this is my last trip before heading back up to school in santa cruz.
can i start a joshua tree appreciation thread? is that cool?
what is one thing you like about being there, climbing or not?
i like the way a jay will swoop between joshua trees and another will fly up or out of the destination tree. it kind of reminds me of those little swinging clicking ball things on someone's office desk.

i'll be there in early/mid january for a weekend- my third trip of the season.

i really have come to enjoy the area now that i've become somewhat proficient in the climbing techniques required there- it has become a great way to spend the weekend pushing my limits and spending time with my friends.

gotta love Jtree :) besides the great climbing, you are often treated to some amazing sunsets as you drive out of the park.

i'll be there on Friday also, planning to try and get to Dairy Queen if I can get there before the crowds.

i wanna get on sail away or some other uber-classic.
also, i don't think i've ever had to french free a 5.8 start anywhere else.

Anyone interested in doing Goof Proof Roof if it rains?

I'm light (barely leading 5.10a since returning from injury) but I can still nail... :-)

I'll belay and follow hard shit, just can't lead it right now.

PM me or email or call (202-302-4130). I'm around, but my phone sucks so you'll probably get my voicemail.

The usual suspects are otherwise occupied (eg. wimmin in town).

You've got me droolin' to get back there. We missed going with our large group from Colorado in October because we were in the middle of a move. And now I've hurt my back. :(

OK, time to fix up the back so we can get our JT fix! Anybody know a good chiropractor in Montrose, CO?

Heather and I are planning on leaving to go down tomorrow, the chance of rain has me a little worried. It used to be no problem when we actually lived in J-Tree but now driving down from the Bay area is a little farther to go for possibly one day of climbing.
Also thinking about hitting New Jack City for a day of sport on the way down.

Oh yeah, the appreciation thing, J-Tree is the reason I moved to California from PA, I was working on a project in 29 palms for 7 months, met a girl (Heather), took me to the park, that's all it took, I freaked out and moved out here with her. Of coarse, money ran out and we had to get real jobs (bummer). Hmmmm, I miss that place

We do an annual turkey in the desert trip for thanksgiving every year. This year was great!!!

Great things about jtree...night climbing or hiking in the desert with a bunch of people. Try Jumbo corridor at night. Really cool!

I am currently rehabbing from knee surgery and am watching the Jtree season pass me by. I have spent at least a week per year there for the past 10 years but not this year because of injury.

There are few places in this world as moving as Jtree. I had a fascination with the place prior to being a climber and ever having even entered the park because of the U2 album titled, The Joshua Tree.

My first trip there as a noob, I hated the place. I had no gear and all the bolted routes seemed runout and scary. I retreated to Red Rocks that year.

A few years later, I came back armed with a rack and improved skills (especially crackclimbing skills). It was then that I realized the rewards of being a rockclimber in Jtree. It is a true priviledge!

It seems that Jtree is about the whole experience and climbing is a mere (although integral) part of it. I don't seem to push my physical limits there very often, although the psychological limits are often taxed.

I love the whole experience of climbing, camping, and living in Jtree. I have cut my teeth as a climber and a person in that park. I find that climbing is my excuse to be in such a beautiful place. In my current injured state, I am trying to get my fiance to go this weekend so I can belay her but not climb. Although climbing is the primary reason why I have gone in the past, now I just want to go there.

I am motivated by the OPs enthusiasm for his trip to Jtree. I hope to go back soon.

Happirgrrl;
Sport climbers do not usually like climbing there. It's
too sporty for them!
Their mecca is usually New Jack City or Mt. Williamson.
IMO JTree Rules!

Trad scares you? J-tree is one of God's own climbing destinations.

I guess if you are looking for closely spaced bolts, however, you will be sorely disappointed.

JTree sucks...
The rocks are too sharp, too crowded, it's really cold and windy there sometimes...
trad climbing is overrated anyway...
It's also far away from my house, it's like a 2 hour drive...
What a pain in the ass!!!

Just guessing, since I live 1.5 hours from J Tree and you live in New Hampshire, that I've done a lot more trad in J Tree than you have. I didn't say anything J Tree being scary -- some of it is; most of it isn't. I just meant that I like the atmosphere there more than the climbing. There might be a ton of established routes at J Tree, but how many of them really are high quality by modern standards? Or by any standards for that matter; you know, J Tree used to be considered a "practice area."

Fair, enough, Jay. I thought there were some very good lines there, and I may have hit them all up in my 3-4 months combined time there.

I also hit a few duds, so I will give you that. However my dad tells me endless stories of climbing with the Yosemite hardmen there when the snows hit the Valley, and they would all move south. I tend to think of climbs there as a stepping stone to the bigger, badder areas, and I think they deserve their due respect.

I certainly didn't see anything else worthy of my attentions in So-Cal while I was there, and I did try to find alternatives.
