I splurged and bought a bottle of the quarter-cask after Christmas this year. The stuff is fantastic. The scent really is reminiscent of the wood in the barrels, and it's just a bit sweeter than Laphroaig normally is, while still holding the fierce peatiness the brand is famous for. Two thumbs up, say Zombie Siskel and Ebert. I think Caol Ila will be my next purchase.

two slurred thumbs up for Aardberg - absolutely my favorite scotch... Laphroig is very good too, have to keep an eye out for the quarter-cask

For an Islay, my choice is Lagavulin. Complex, yet tasty. Laphroig is too "iodiney" for me. Of course, it is a matter of taste.

Caol Ila's a challenging one, not really a beginner's whisky but excellent nonethless. I remember being suprised by it when sharing a bottle with a friend last year (well, that and spending the night on his sofa, puking fiercely into a pair of his shoes).
