What type of climbing? My thoughts for the thaw out are always Moab and the desert. Red Rocks would also be a great choice. Great dirt camping and some solitude (Utah desert area's) to be found. Have fun.. :D Fly

From Calgary, I would head south and do Nevada at Red Rocks. Climbed there this December and it is incredible. Also, Joshua Tree would probably be prime time, another spot that is unequaled. I have not been to any other spots, but I know that Mount Lemon would be good in Arizona. I just say get to the Desert and you will be happy. Really it depends on you taste in climbing.

the red river gorge! i'll admit i'm a bit biased but it has just about everything you could ask for aside from bouldering. hundreds of some of the best sport and trad lines in the country on beautiful rock and, in march, (usually) great weather for good friction..

I am also looking at a March road trip, and since I need to go someplace new (my criteria) I have chosen Red Rocks. My reasoning is that this is someplace that the wife never wants to go to, and since Vegas in and of itself holds little fascination for me, I will most likely hunker down and try to find someone for the whole Epinephrine/Crimson Chrysalis thang. New area, new climbs, mucho fun. I hate to bag on RRG, but I found the routes there to be too predictable and repetitive. See pocket, reach pocket, pull on pocket. Besides, I value the views and altitude over difficulty, but when you can combine everything in one fell swoop, then why not?

In reply to: I am also looking at a March road trip, and since I need to go someplace new (my criteria) I have chosen Red Rocks. When? Spring break is middle of March. I might be able to head northwest to Las Vegas for a few days, if you don't mind dragging my sorry sack of a wannabe climber up some hideous, run-out, crumbly, sketchy, and committing 5.2 route.

I have been to red rocks twice now, and for sport climbing, it doesn't hold a candle to the RED. Yeah the view is awsome, and rooming is pretty cheap, but for the climbing go to the RED.

Indian Creek, hands down for me! Jtree, RRG, Yosemite, Needles are my runner-ups.

Even after the dozenth trip or so out there, in search of non-choss pile, I never have found anything worthy. Although, I take pride in no longer having to tape up my hands for the cracks 8^) (not bad for a midwesterner)
